lgbt-events-south-florida-1Friday night was the beginning of the weekend celebration of Alibi’s 14th year anniversary and the crowds were out in support! That night featured the 5 year employee recognition ring ceremony, drawing for prizes every hour starting at 9 pm till midnight including a Flat Screen TV and much more fun and valuable prizes, and a Broward Bares it preview starring Nikki Adams and Rod Stephens. Congratulations to Mark, Jackson and the entire staff of Alibi for a fabulous 14th year anniversary and I wish them many more years to come. Sunday morning was the 23rd annual Aids Walk on Miami Beach which once again feature a multitude of teams that raised money for this much needed cause.

lgbt-events-south-florida-2Sunday night was the annual Stars of the Rainbow benefit for the Pride Center at Equality Park and once again it was held at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Pier 66 in the Crystal Ballroom. Many Community Leaders and activists were honored for their consistent work for the betterment of the GLBT community here in Florida and beyond. Without a doubt one of the highlights of the event was having Congresswoman Debbie Wassermann-Shultz address the audience. Everyone was brought to their feet when the Congresswoman talked about her support of the repeal of DODT and led the charge on addressing the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. It was also refreshing to hear how she works so hard at reaching out to others including Republican Ileana Ros Lehtinen.

lgbt-events-south-florida-7The good people at Johnny’s had a benefit in December to raise money for Father Bill Collins of Poverello to get a car. Father Bill received his new car this past week.  Father Bill received his new car keys from (CCCU) City County Credit Union President, Lloyd Gill and was all smiles as photographers took photos. He is now driving a pristine Certified Pre-Owned Silver 2009 Toyota Corolla with barely 32k miles. Lloyd Gill was able to get the Credit Union’s Extended Warranty Provider Allied Solutions to donate a “bumper to bumper” 5 year warranty valued at approximately $2,000. All dealers fees and administrative fees were waived and CCCU paid for the tag registration as well. I would like to take this opportunity to thank AJ, Sean, Uncle Al, CCCU and all who were instrumental in getting one of our community’s best, Father Bill, his car!

lgbt-events-south-florida-8One of our own Needs Help

Within our LGBT community exists very special people who volunteer their time and talent on a daily basis.  And these people have touched so many lives and made such a difference.  Judy Shepherd is one of these people. Judy is an energetic, committed and trusted member of our community known by everyone. She is first in line to volunteer and support a myriad of events in the community.   Whether it’s the Stonewall Library and Archives, the Pride Center, Lavender Events, or to care for your animals while you’re away from home, her answer is always “yes”. And now Judy needs your help. Recently diagnosed with cancer, Judy is undergoing surgery and follow-up treatment in a local hospital. Like many others, Judy is without health insurance. She needs the help and support of the family she has helped and supported all these years. A dedicated bank account has been set up by The Pride Center to manage donations sent on her behalf. Please stop by the Center any time and make your tax deductible donation or use the PayPal option on the front page of their website:  PrideCenterFlorida.org. Judy has stood by and supported our community for decades – it is now time for us to stand by and support Judy.
