GRASS ROOTS EFFORT TO “GET OUT THE VOTE”

PLANNED IN WILTON MANORS, FL

As the coming Presidential election looms closer, several LGBT community leaders, local gay media organizations, Florida Democratic Party campaign activists and leaders have joined forces in a concerted effort to register and educate as many LGBT voters as possible. In Wilton Manors, the event will kick-off with a traditional bar crawl and will take place on Wilton Drive, better known as “The Drive” and recognized for the many LGBT businesses and nightclubs. On Sunday, August 26, at 2 pm, volunteers from Organization for America, committee members, entertainers, and Democratic Party officials will gather at Sidelines Sports Bar, located at 2031 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors, which is the starting point of the “Wilton Manors GET OUT THE VOTE Bar Crawl”.

In 45 minute intervals, the crowd will move along “The Drive” to the next bar, lead by some of South Florida’s celebrated female entertainers. Once at the next location, voter registrars and Democratic Party officials will have a chance to speak to potential voters and hopefully, attract an even larger group to travel to the next club. A total of eight (8) bars and nightclubs have agreed to participate in the “Crawl”, gladly welcoming all campaign revelers. They are Sidelines Sports Bar, Bill’s Filling Station, The Manor, Rosie’s Bar & Grill, New Moon, Matty’s On the Drive, The Alibi, and Boom.

Promotions for this event will include ads placed in local LGBT publications, social media postings, posters placed at several businesses along “The Drive”, as well as coverage from major mainstream media outlets.

Many of the statewide Democratic Campaign committees have endorsed this effort and have since designated it as a “DAY OF ACTION TO GET OUT THE VOTE” in their respective cities and counties, using our campaign as a template. Some areas will utilize places, such as Pride Centers, shopping malls, libraries, college campuses, or wherever masses of people gather, all to educate and register potential LGBT voters in Florida.

“We are so fired up here in Wilton Manors, exclaimed Michael Albetta, Vice-Chair of Campaign Committee, Florida Democratic Party. “This idea has taken off and you will see such an energized coalition of LGBT movers and shakers getting out the vote!”
