On week three of Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 5, the Queens were challenged to create a children’s show in an episode called “Draggle Rock.” After choking on their lines during their skits, both Monica Beverly Hillz and Coco Montrese found themselves in the bottom two. Coco really showed up during the lip sync for your life challenge and Monica more or less danced in place, so, in the end, it was Monica who sashayed away. It was a pleasure to sit down and chat with her to find out some of the “T” from the show.

Monica-HillzAt what age did female impersonation become an interest & how did you pick your name?

When I was younger I danced as a boy in Spanish groups . After the first drag show I went to, I was 17, going on 18, I fell in love with it.

My name came from a character Monica from Indian, Movie, you know Bollywood – She was an Indian Goddess- I always said my name would be a reference to where I wanted to live and I have always wanted to be in Beverly Hills. I just changed the “s” at the end to a “z”

How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you had been chosen?

I auditioned on seasons one, three and five.  I was really ecstatic! I think I cried for like 45 minutes.

Tell me about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?

I couldn’t do anything better, I thought I would do things one way and it ended up the way it did. I really found myself on that show so I’m really thankful for it.

Who do you want to win?

I really wanted to win so after I got eliminated I don’t care. Ha Ha. Just kidding.  I think Jinx Monsoon should win. I thought she was weird and out the box at first, but I fell in love with her and I think she’s a great performer

Did appearing on Rupaul’s Drag Race help you deal with living as a Transgendered Person? Has it gotten easier for you since you “came out” as a woman?

It really did, saying it [that I was transgendered] out loud helped so much. I realize now that it’s ok, and I don’t have to feel like a freak and I know I have people supporting me, before I didn’t really have much.

Tell me about Monica when she is not in Drag? The woman behind Monica Beverly Hillz…

I am just a normal girl, going on dates, shopping, I live a normal life…I’m the same person, I just have less makeup on.

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.

Honestly, I’m really shy… a lot of people don’t believe it, but I’m really a shy person

What’s ahead for Monica Beverly Hillz?

Right now actually, I’m preparing to be in a film that my friend is doing, I’m touring and speaking to other Trans people. I’m moving to LA in May and transitioning and having surgery and all that great stuff.
