The ComingOutCuba Foundation is an organization in Miami that was founded by Osmany Caballero and Lior Halabi. Caballero, 37, is a Cuban exile, who was raised in Costa-Rica and brought to USA with the help of Mas Canosa from The National Cuban American Foundation at the age of 10. Halabi is his Israeli born husband and business partner who moved to the USA in 2014. In his native Israel, he worked as a political consultant for the first official gay lobby at the Israeli parliament, which he opened in 2010. Together, they are the creators of this organization LSC_IMG_2185which is not affiliated with any religious or political organizations, and whose sole purpose is to organize, activate and engage a united Cuban-American community and to mobilize human and financial resources to care for those in need in South Florida and around the U.S.

COC programs provide a job placement platform for multicultural artists to exhibit and perform, acts as an agency for talented gay and Cuban artist while serving as a role model for the younger generation, and offers grants for education in the arts.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Lior and Osmany. They told me a bit more about their foundation, La Santa Cuba, and what we can expect for the future.

Why was the organization started?

OC – “The organization, which we started back in May of 2015, was inspired by an amazing, private and very sentimental picture of a family member in Cuba. The image was taken during Cuba´s gold era of the 1940s and showcases a very lavish gay Cuban culture that existed before the revolution. The picture, which only came to light after my family member passed away, shows the struggle which my family, like many Cuban families had to endure as exiles in the quest to find freedom and follow the American dream”

LH – “I find a strong similarity between the Jewish and the Cuban culture; both cultures are very patriotic to their land which they were exiled from, the Jews to Israel and Cubans to their Island. I gained my experience by opening the first official gay lobby in the Israeli Parliament and creating a political platform to the LGBT community.

Both personal experiences gave birth and solidarity to organization’s mission and a goal:

“To reveal the gay Cuban culture prior to the revolution, while building a new Cuban American LBGTQ community”.

Who does the organization appeal to and why?

LSC_IMG_4165LH- “We will appeal to the worldwide art and culture enthusiast; straight and gay, who in return will make donations for our future programs which will include a talent agency and a cultural coffee center.  One of our main goals is to support and provide a culture and art driven platform for Cuban and LGBTQ artists while hosting art exhibitions and performances throughout the world.”

Is it just Cuban-Americans that can get involved with ComingOutCuba?

OC- “Anyone can be involved. More than 50% of our supporters are neither Cuban nor gay. They believe in the mission and that is more than enough reason to be part of it.”

Why does ComingOutCuba not take a stance on political views and religious views?

LH- “C.O.C is not affiliated with any religious or political organizations because we strongly believe that neither politics nor religions are stronger than a united Cuban culture. Our sole mission is to organize, activate and engage a united Cuban-American community and mobilize human and financial resources to care for those in need in the USA, Cuba and around the world no matter their political or religious beliefs.”

What kind of future events/activities can people expect from ComingOutCuba?

OC- “We will inspire, educate and celebrate the gay Cuban culture by thinking “outside of the box” and producing amazing public events. As a culture and art driven foundation we give a platform and representation for Cuban and LGBT artists.  We will focus on Cuban and gay art exhibits and we will host them throughout the hottest art events in the world. The first one will happen during Art Basel Miami. “
