When people experience major back pain and body aches, they don’t know who to turn to. Few are aware that a trained pain specialist is all they need. At American Pain Experts (APEX), you can receive care from all sides of the medical spectrum. The doctors at America Pain Experts, Dr. Neel Amin and Dr. Tom Macek, are double board certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Both physicians are fellowship trained in pain medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, the birthplace and leading program of modern pain management in the United States.

The doctors at American Pain Experts specialize in helping patients with back pain, neck pain, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, facet disease, joint disease, neuropathy (HIV, diabetes), cancer pain, sympathetic pain, headaches, herpes zoster (shingles) and more.

“Back pain, however, is the biggest issue of clients,” explained Dr. Amin.

Pain Management is much more than writing prescriptions for narcotics. Both physicians are experts in providing the newest procedures resulting from the advancements of modern technology and recognize that incorporating these inventions are an important part of pain management.

In addition to traditional practices for dealing with pain like epidural steroid injection, radiofrequency ablation, intra-articular facet injection and intra-articular joint injections with steroids; the staff at APEX offer massage therapy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, stress management and relaxation techniques.

Dr. Amin said that during his anesthesiology residency, he did a rotation in pain management and it really resonated with him.

“I saw that you can build relationships with your patients with pain management and change their lives,” he said.

The physicians see patients of all ages. The younger patients typically start coming because of sports injuries and the older patients usually have symptom-based pain.

APEX also specializes in patients who are HIV positive as they work with HIV neuropathy pain management.

“We are the only pain management place that takes Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and Positive Healthcare, said Macek.

Dr. Amin and Dr. Macek use state-of-the-art equipment that shows every move they make under the guidance of an x-ray, so that they work on the exact spot where the pain is emanating from. The practice uses the best equipment; there is little room for errors to be made.

“There are no blind procedures,” Amin explained.

There are three medical assistants on staff.

“We picked [our staff] for their personalities,” added Dr. Macek. “You can train anyone to do the right thing. . .We encourage jokes and a free environment. We didn’t want a dreary atmosphere.”

Their office environment is so important to them because it really makes a difference with clients.

“Pain patients are already upset, they don’t need to be around people who treat them badly,” said Amin.

“When patients come here, it feels like a family,” Amin said.
