South Florida Symphony Presents Its First 2015-16 Production “And the Tony Goes To…”

The South Florida Symphony, under the direction for another stellar season by Sebrina Maria Alfonso, would like to cordially invite you to the first show in their 2015-16 Masterworks Series, “And the Tony Goes To…” This show is a salute to a few of the standards and shows that everyone loves from the Great White Way.

The first concert will be held at the Tennessee Williams Theatre on Saturday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert talk by Edward Pitts beginning at 6:45 p.m. The show will then be performed at the Carole & Barry Kate Performing Arts Auditorium on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on Sunday, November 15 at 4 p.m. The last concert in this series will be held on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

The lineup starting off this year’s Masterworks Series consists of Maestra Alfonso, stage director David McCarty, sopranos Mara Bonde and Bridgette Gan, mezzo-sopranos Janna Baty and Beth Holland, tenor Davron Monroe, baritone John Whittlesey, and bass-baritone Neil Nelson.

Act One of this production will shine a light on the beloved musical “Guys and Dolls.” The songs that will be performed include “Overture to Guys and Dolls,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.” Next, the orchestra recognizes Jerome Kern and his music in “Showboat.” The Orchestra will perform songs such as “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man o’ Mine” and “Ol’ Man River.” Oscar Hammerstein II helped Kern write “Showboat”, and the Orchestra will go on to play some hits from the musical “Oklahoma!” Finally, three songs from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” will be presented.

Following intermission, the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita” will be played, and audience members will enjoy such classics as “High Flying, Adored” and “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” There will be a medley dedicated to Stephen Sondheim played afterwards, with songs from such beloved musicals as “Follies,” “Company,” and “Into the Woods” on the roster. Finally, the Orchestra revisits Leonard Bernstein with the show’s finale, which will see the Orchestra play four favorites from “Candide.”

Ticket prices begin at $35 per person for the Key West and Fort Lauderdale concert dates and $30 per person for the Boca Raton concert date.
