Good as Gold – Let Estate Jewelry & Watch Brokers of America, Inc. turn your ‘trash’ to treasure

Do you ever see those “We’ll buy your gold” commercials and think about trading your jewelry in? Well, it’s not just gold that could bring you money, it’s silver, vintage watches, stone jewelry, flatware and much more. You could be sitting on a goldmine and not even know it.

Keith Howard, owner of the local company Estate Jewelry & Watch Brokers of America, Inc., is an expert in this area.

“Basically what I do is buy and sell vintage jewelry, watches, silver and decorative small items,” he explained.

It’s a business he is passionate about. Growing up, he worked at his grandparent’s appraisal business. He went on to work in stores in the United States and international companies and learned everything there is to know about estate appraisals and liquidations.

He felt the need to open up his own local business after hearing horror stories about people being manipulated and taken advantage of.

Howard said that a lot of his customers have been burned in the past by people who didn’t give them honest appraisals.

“I’ve made offers and they are shocked because I can offer them so much more than other places,” Howard explained. “It’s due to the fact that I am a small independent company so I don’t have the huge overhead that other companies have at other venues.”

For example, a customer brought in a pair of cufflinks made by Van Cleef & Arpels from the 1940s and the customer told Howard that he was offered only $300 for them in the past. Howard offered him $1,700 for the cufflinks.

“I know what its worth and I know the client value,” he said. “Consequently that customer sent me more pieces.”

Howard said that he prides himself on being able to get his customers much more for their valuables.

“Especially today with the economy in these dire straights,” he said. “I think it’s great to offer these services and help one another.”

Howard said that there are many items that you could have lying around your house gathering dust that can make you good money. Some of the most popular items are high-grade watches and sport model watches.

“People don’t realize what sport model watches from the 1960s and 1970s are worth,” Howard said.

For example, the Rolex GMT-Master watch originally cost $200, but today you could get anywhere from $1,000 to possibly as much as $4,000 for the item.

Howard said that it’s true that gold is at an all time high right now and definitely is worth money, but an old stainless steel wristwatch can also be worth a lot. He said sterling silver flatware can be valued at a few hundred or even a few thousand.

He said he can help people throw Gold Parties — for themselves or for charity — where they can gather and bring their gold for appraising and selling. If it’s for a charity event, partial proceeds can go to a non-profit.

But for those looking to turn what they think of as trash to treasure, they can find it in items they’ve inherited from loved ones.

“So many times, a relative — or someone — dies and you inherit things and you don’t know what to do. People dispose of it and are potentially throwing away thousands of dollars. It’s important for someone to take a look at the items and tell you what they’re worth.”

“I do that for people,” he added. “No one needs to sell it, I am here for you to bring these items to and I can tell you what they are worth and when the right time is to sell them.”
