Genre Conexiones; Cuba (not so) Libre

El pasado mes de diciembre, los gobiernos de los EEUU y Cuba anunciaron que, con la ayuda del Papa Francisco, el Vaticano y oficiales canadienses, habían llegado a un acuerdo nuevo incluyendo el comienzo de relaciones diplomáticas por primera vez en más de 50 años. Los cambios anunciados no incluyen el viaje irrestricto pero señalan que el gobierno estadounidense está trabajando de manera diferente para efectuar cambios políticos en la isla.

Como todos sabemos, el sur de la Florida tiene más cubanos que cualquier lugar afuera de la isla caribeña, y muchos de los cubanos exilados en Miami no apoyan ni los cambios ni el gobierno del Presidente Barack Obama, con su política de cambio. Pero lo que sí parece interesante es que muchos de los cubanos jóvenes viviendo en EEUU no piensan así y ellos sí apoyan los cambios y tienen muchas ganas de visitar la isla, y de ver las relaciones con su país normalizadas. Cada uno tiene su opinión de la situación, del embargo, pero lo que parece obvio es que las cosas SÍ van a cambiar; resultando en una Cuba modernizada, más abierta, con mejores relaciones con nuestro país: aunque con su posición nueva, la administración estadounidense ha aislado (aún más) la comunidad disidente en Little Habana.

Vida LGBT

En términos de la vida de la población LGBT en Cuba, ya han cambiado mucho las cosas durante la presidencia del líder comunista Raúl Castro, hermano del dictador revolucionario Fidel Castro. La hija del segundo Castro, Mariela Castro, ¨ha salido del closet¨ a favor de derechos humanos para nuestra comunidad, ha organizado y defendido los LGBTs y desde entonces ha traído muchas libertades y cambios para la comunidad. El gobierno cubano tiene un record terrible en los derechos humanos, así que todavía existe mucho en que trabajar. Para quedar perfectamente claro, no existe muchas libertades en la isla y el gobierno castrista antes encarcelaba a la comunidad gay cubana, pero como en todo el mundo, ha cambiado y mejorado las vidas de los LGBT en Cuba. Hay protecciones laborales (en EEUU no) y hasta el gobierno cubre la operación para cambiar de sexo.

Tourismo

Los cubanos viviendo en EEUU ya pueden volver a la isla para visitar sus familias, pero para la gente que no es cubana, hay restricciones y solo es posible viajar a la isla en ¨people to people¨ tours organizados por agencias de viajes con una licencia. Aunque hay vuelos a Cuba desde Miami y Fort Lauderdale, son vuelos privados (chárter). Seguro que las aerolíneas como Jetblue, Spirit, y American Airlines, están muy interesadas en el mercado nuevo cubano. Hasta ahora no pueden operar vuelos directamente desde los Estados Unidos hasta Cuba, pero con los cambios recientes, el viaje directo parece más y más probable. Si terminan las restricciones, los cubanos tienen que mejorar la infraestructura turística, sobre todo la capacidad de procesar viajeros en el aeropuerto José Martí, que ya se cuenta con demoras debido a sus inhabilidades aduanas.

Futuro

Nadie sabe lo que sucederá cuando muere el Presidente cubano Raúl Castro, pero con casi 84 años, es seguro que no le quedan muchos años así que los EEUU deben seguir posicionándose de nuevo para seguir adelante y trabajar con la comunidad disidente así como la población cubana para forjar una verdadera Cuba LIBRE.

Big changes in DC´s relationship with Havana

Last month, the governments of the US and Cuba announced that, along with help from Pope Francis, the Vatican, and Canadian officials, they had arrived at a new agreement including the re-start of diplomatic relations for the first time in more than 50 years.  The changes don´t include unrestricted travel but they do signal that the US government is working in a new, different way to bring about political change on the island.

As we all know, South Florida is home to more Cubans than any other place outside of the Caribbean island and many of the exile community support neither these new changes nor the government of President Obama, with his politics of change. What is surprising is the fact that young Cubans living in the US DO support the changes and are excited to see the relationship between the countries normalized. Surely, everyone has their own opinion about the situation and the effectiveness of the 50 year embargo. However, it´s obvious, to even the most casual observer,  that things ARE GOING to change, resulting in a modernized, more open Cuba, one with better relationship with our country, even if the government´s new position has (even further) isolated the dissident community in Little Havana.

LGBT Life

There have also been changes in Cuba for its LGBT population under the leadership of communist President Raul Castro, brother of the revolutionary dictator Fidel Castro. Raul´s daughter, Mariela Castro, has ¨come out¨ for LGBT human rights and she has organized demonstrations (Surprise)and defended our community in the highest levels of Cuban government. However, let´s be perfectly clear, freedom in Cuba is hard to come by, and doesn´t really exist at all, but at least there are work place protections for the LGBT community and the government even recognizes the Transgender community and offers gender reassignment surgery as a covered medical procedure.

Tourism

Cubans living in the US are already permitted to travel to the island to visit their families but for the non-Cuban American population, there have been strict travel restrictions (that were somewhat relaxed several years ago) and it´s only possible to travel to the island on a ¨people to people¨ trip that is organized and operated by a licensed tour operator. Even though there are daily flights to Cuba from Miami and Fort Lauderdale they are only charter flights. There are no current commercial flights, but surely airlines like JetBlue, Spirit, and American Airlines, all of which have a very strong presence in South Florida, are very interested in the new, emerging Cuban market. With the new changes, it´s likely just a matter of time before there are direct flights between the two countries. If the travel restrictions do end, the Cubans will have to invest heavily in infrastructure, above all in José Martí Airport, which often experiences long flight delays because of lack of customs agents and the ability to process all the passengers that are already traveling there.

In the future

No one knows what will happen when President Castro dies or is no longer in power in Cuba, but since he is already almost 84, surely he doesn’t have much time left in power. So, the US government should continue changing its posture toward Cuba and continue working with the dissident community as well as the Cuban population to forge a truly free Cuba.
