Miami’s first festival dedicated to LGBT artists
FUNDarte presents “Out in the Tropics,” a five-day event that organizers call “Miami’s first and only festival dedicated to LGBTQ artists and issues.” The festival will be held from Tuesday, May 5 through Saturday, May 9. The festival will present works of art, such as music, dance, theater, poetry, and film, from the various artists who are participating, and will also include lectures, Q&As, and backstage mentoring from these acclaimed artists.
The festival begins with an opening reception at the LGBT Visitor Center at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5. This event is free to attend; please RSVP by e-mailing info@fundarte.us. The next day, also at 7 p.m., there will be a poetry reading by Miami native Chely Lima. He has written 29 books of poetry that have been translated into eight different languages. The reading, which will be held at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, will be followed by a cocktail reception. This event is also free to attend; RSVP by e-mailing the address above.
On Thursday, May 7 at 9 p.m. at O Cinema Miami Beach, there will be a screening of the classic film Caravaggio by Derek Jarman. This movie has been recently selected for a digital remastering by the British Film Institute. Tickets are $11 general admission; they can be purchased by going to o-cinema.org. On Friday, May 8 at 8:30 p.m. at the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore, performance artist M Lamar will be performing a musical and aesthetic journey called Surveillance Punishment and the Black Psyche. Then, on Saturday, May 9, there will be a double feature at The Colony Theater. At 8 p.m. there will be a presentation of Lovebirds, a solo play written and performed by the GLAAD Media Award-winning comedian Marga Gomez. At 9:30, there will be a live performance called JARMAN (All this Maddening Beauty), which is an homage to the late queer artist and filmmaker Derek Jarman, producer of Caravaggio. The performance will star John Moletress, founding director of force/collision, with text written by Obie Lifetime Achievement Award-winner Caridad Svich.
