The Broward Center for the Performing Arts Announces the Classical Series 2015-16

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts has announced its upcoming Classical Series 2015-16 curated by the distinguished conductor James Judd, featuring captivating concerts and a rousing symphonic experience as masterful musicians play the repertoire’s greatest masterworks.

Subscription and individual tickets are on sale now for the series that features Pinchas Zukerman and the Zukerman Trio in an unforgettable evening of chamber works, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in a dazzling program of Russian romanticism and a solo piano recital by Grammy Award-winner Emanuel Ax. Series subscribers will also receive a savings when adding a concert by the acclaimed classical fusion group Black Violin and an evening with the hilarious Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.

“We are pleased to announce a season in which exceptional performers will interpret some of the greatest music in the repertoire that will reward and excite classical music fans while also welcoming and engaging music lovers who are new to the form,” said Judd. “In addition, there will be master classes and other experiences to directly connect audiences to the passionate appeal of classical music.”

Each concert in the series will offer a free “Engaging the Senses” pre-concert preview and wine tasting in the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom hosted by Broward Center Arts Ambassador Lyn Farmer. The witty and informative lectures, held at 7 p.m., offer an intriguing, well-rounded perspective of the program and its relationship to visual art, architecture, literature, wine and food.

The Zukerman Trio launches the series on Monday, February 1 at 8 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater with internationally acclaimed solo violinist Pinchas Zukerman, cellist Amanda Forsythe and pianist Angela  Cheng, performing two of the towering masterworks of the chamber repertoire: the gorgeous “Dumky trio” by Czech master Antonín Dvořák and Beethoven’s regal “Archduke Trio.” Tickets are $65 to $75.

Conductor Dmitry Yablonsky and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra celebrate the glory of Russian music with piano soloist Farhad Badalbeyli on Thursday, February 25 at 8 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater. In its 80th anniversary season, the renowned orchestra presents a program featuring the exuberant passion of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, the haunting beauty of Rachmaninoff’s gorgeous Second Symphony and the crackling energy of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Tickets are $35 to $75 with Lan & Tam Airlines Club Level seats available at $115.

The series culminates in a rare area solo recital by Emanuel Ax on Tuesday, March 22 at 8 p.m. in the Au-Rene Theater. In a remarkable adventure of musical discovery, this brilliant interpreter meets the powerful innovator Ludwig van Beethoven as the celebrated pianist traces Beethoven’s elevation of the piano from a salon instrument to a concert powerhouse in three magical sonatas and music that may have inspired them. The program includes Beethoven’s “Pathetique,” “Appassionata” and Piano Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 2 as well as works by Dussek and Bach. Tickets are priced at $25 to $59 with Lan & Tam Airlines Club Level seats available at $95.

A three-concert subscription series is available for $134.25 to $156.75, offering a savings of 25 percent off the individual ticket price. Group discounts are available. Students with a valid ID may purchase $15 tickets in advance or $20 student rush tickets available two hours before the event at the AutoNation Box Office.

Subscribers will also have the opportunity to save on two events at Parker Playhouse that are also on sale now: Featuring acoustic violinist Wil-B and electric violinist Kev Marcus, both alumni of Dillard High School, accompanied by ace turntable whiz DJTK (Dwayne Dayal) and a drummer, Black Violin presents its blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B and bluegrass music on Friday, February 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $13 to $55.50.

Combining a wicked comic sense of humor with respect for true classical dance, the all-male, 16-member Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo dance a fine line between high art and high camp in their return on Friday, April 15 at 8 p.m. This internationally beloved troupe of burly dancers, affectionately known as the “Trocks,” have delighted audiences with parodies of classical ballet as their over-the-top gestures and powerhouse technique deliver performances that amuse at every level. Tickets are $37.50 to $57.50.
