Fall 2015 Movie Preview: 14 Films to Check Out This Season

Every year, as we count down the days to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the movie studios release some of their most buzzworthy films, to audience acclaim and commercial success. This year is no exception, as there are quite a few movies finally getting their release this fall and we’ve already been talking about many of them for months. Let me tell you about fourteen films you shouldn’t miss this season.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

The Intern

This fun comedy-drama stars Robert De Niro as a 70-year-old widower who finds that retired life can get pretty boring at times. Wishing to feel more vital, he starts a new career all over again at the bottom floor, as an intern for a fashion website. His boss is the much younger Jules (Anne Hathaway).

Stonewall

Set in the late 1960s, a teenage boy, Danny Winters, flees to New York City after being kicked out of his parents’ house for being gay. While living on the street, he is befriended by other street kids who introduce him to The Stonewall Inn. After Danny and the community around him are pushed to the breaking point, a riot quickly turns into a revolution.

Legend

This film is based on the real-life stories of the Kray brothers, who, in the 1960s, were two of the most feared gangsters in all of London. In a surprise turn, Tom Hardy plays both brothers on camera; as the story progresses, we learn how the Krays became some of the most notorious criminals in British history.

The Martian

A group of astronauts land on Mars, and a fierce storm breaks the group apart, leading the others to assume one has died. The lone astronaut on Mars must now signal to Earth that he is alive and devise ways to survive as NASA tries to figure out a way to rescue one of their own.

Steve Jobs

One man’s vision was strong enough to change how we see the world. In this biopic, we are led through three product launches (as a behind-the-scenes visitor) for Apple, culminating in the wildly successful iMac launch in 1998. Key Apple executives and engineers are also seen, played by an impressive roster of actors.

Suffragette

The suffragette movement was very large in Britain as it was in the United States. Set in early 20th-century Britain, Suffragette revolves around the character of Maud, a working woman who also is a wife and mother. Inspired by the renegade Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud, like many other women, chose to stand up for themselves and fight for their right to vote.

Jem and the Holograms

Be warned, Jem fans: this is not an exact retelling of the ’80s cartoon. With that said, it is a fun story. A small-town girl catapults to global stardom and brings her three sisters along for the ride. With their band ready to tour the world, the girls learn a lot about themselves and find their inner voices.

Burnt

Sometimes the most talented people can be their own worst enemies. Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) is a two-star Michelin-rated chef in Paris, but his self-destructive tendencies always cause him to lose out on success just as he tastes it. With encouragement from a beautiful lady friend, Adam sets out in search of his third Michelin star and his own kitchen.

Brooklyn

A young girl from Ireland named Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) moves to New York City in the 1950s to create a new life for herself. She finds herself quickly enveloped in romance, but her life back in Ireland quickly creeps up on her, as do the people she left behind. Does she choose her country of origin or her new life in America?

Spectre

James Bond (Daniel Craig) returns to the silver screen in another thrilling mission. He travels to Mexico City and Rome to piece together the mystery behind the evil organization known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile, in London, Moneypenny and Q dig into the life of Madeleine Swann, Mr. White’s daughter, who may know more about SPECTRE than she lets on.

The Peanuts Movie

In this feel-good 3D CGI comedy, Charlie Brown embarks on a quest to win the heart of the Little Red-Haired Girl, who just moved with her parents into his neighborhood. At the same time, Snoopy vows to take down the Red Baron, and takes to the skies to end the feud once and for all!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

The final chapter of The Hunger Games saga begins with Panem completely enveloped in war and strife. The Danish Girl

This film is the touching story of Lili Elbe, one of the first women to completely transition from male to female, and her wife. With a simple request, one of the most unique love stories begins. The movie asks, “What do you do when someone you love wants to change?”

Macbeth

This is the latest film adaptation of the William Shakespeare masterpiece. For the Shakespeare purists out there, you will be happy to know that the original setting (11th century Denmark) is intact, as is the original dialogue. Michael Fassbender plays the Scottish lord who will do anything to wear the king’s crown.
