Shuga Cain Talks ‘Drag Race’ Season 11

In episode 10 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 11, the mini challenge was to work well with other people, and Ru brought in the Pit Crew (lots of them) to work with one queen in a game called “Balls to the Walls.” The queen who got the most balls in the basket the fastest wins.

Delta Work made a cameo appearance as the Ball girl. The winner was Vangie who won a $2,500 gift card to Dirt Squirrel. The Maxi Challenge was for the girls to star in a Magic Show in two teams. Since Vanjie won the mini challenge she gets to choose her team which consisted of Silky, A’keria, and Yvie. That leaves Nina, Brooke and Shuga on the other team. They had to name their magic act, write an act and do a magic show (they were mentored by Magician Kyle Marlett.

The guest judges were Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).

Team number one was The Mighty Tucks (Nina, Brooke and Shuga), and the other team was called Black Magic and they were clearly the inferior team. The runway look was Caftan Realness.

The clear winner of the challenge this week was Nina West, who won a $3,000 gift card from Marek and Richard, and a $3,000 Gift card from Outofoffice.com.

The bottom two were Shuga and Vangie with Shuga sashaying away.

We caught up with Shuga Cain to dish on her Drag Race experience.

At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

I was 38 when I first did drag and it was, for fun, for pride so that I could live my fantasy.

Shuga comes from the color purple, as she was a singer and I am a singer. Growing up I really looked up to Candis Cayne, and that’s how I got my last name, but I spell it a little different.

How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen?

I applied twice for season 10 and then 11. When I got the call I was ecstatic, and I finally felt that everything I sacrificed was finally playing off. It was the most amazing feeling.

Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?

It was so surreal and crazy, but it was amazing. It was definitely one of the hardest things I ever done, but I am very proud of what I showed and grateful that I made it as far as I did.

Is there something you wish you did different and/or is there a certain look you wish we could have all seen?

Although I don’t believe in should’ve, would’ve, could’ve, this time I will have to say yes, the Monster Ball, that look was terrible.

What’s your marital status?

My partner and I have been together for 8 years, and we are engaged. If it wasn’t for him I don’t think I could have pursued my passion of drag. We have made it work together, and he is an amazing human being.

Who do you want to win?

I really feel like I would love to see Nina take this as she is an older queen and is very classic, fun, campy and very professional.

What’s ahead for Shuga?

Everything, I am looking at film, television, and theater. It’s all in my secret evil plan to take RuPaul’s job…LOL!!

Is there anything else you want to say?

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me along this journey. I am so overwhelmed!
