Provincetown in 2020 will be just as spectacular as years past, with some extra special events! The list of engaging and meaningful reasons to visit this special destination seems endless. Grand celebrations like Pride and Carnival attract thousands of visitors who flock to the town for revelry, celebration, and freedom of expression. Smaller events for specific groups stretch throughout the year, providing community and a place to feel accepted for a wide diversity of people. Many visitors are groups of friends and families who have chosen Provincetown as their vacation destination for its dazzling coastal setting, numerous art galleries, homey lodging options, star-studded entertainment options, and welcoming attitude.
On top of all that already makes Provincetown one of the greatest destinations out there, 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the pilgrim’s first landing in Provincetown. To celebrate this historically momentous occasion, the Provincetown calendar will have several special events on top of its traditional schedule. The events are centered on the arrival of Mayflower II to Provincetown, currently scheduled from September 10th to the 14th.
The Mayflower II, a full-scale recreation of the original ship sailed by the pilgrims to Provincetown, will join the other tall ships that come to Provincetown Harbor each summer and fall. During the visit, spectators will be able to witness daily reenactments of the historic signing of the Mayflower Compact as well as come aboard for a tour. On the 12th, the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum will host a formal gala commemorating the 400th anniversary of the landing of the pilgrims.
On the 13th, there will be a visit from the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, which includes descendants of the passengers aboard the Mayflower who played an integral role in the founding of this nation. The visit will include a memorial service, a ceremonial wreath-laying, a procession through the town, and a luncheon at the base of the Pilgrim Monument. As the Mayflower II sets sail on the morning of the 14th, there will be a Sunrise Toast and Bon Voyage.
Beyond the happenings surrounding the 400th anniversary, the calendar is already filled with events that promise to make 2020 another special year in Provincetown.
