Dear Andreus,
There is a guy that I really like, and we spend so much time together. The only problem is that I can never get a word in. He loves to talk, and in the beginning, I found it charming, but now I find it annoying. I feel like everything is always about him, and that I am just there not being noticed. He never asks me about me or about my day. Whenever we meet, he immediately goes on an endless rant about himself. I don’t know what to do because I really do like him. I just don’t want to hurt his feelings by telling him he talks too much.
Sincerely Jeremiah P.
Dear Jeremiah,
Well, this happens a lot. He could be talking out of nervousness, or he could just be self-centered. Also, we can’t assume that people have the same capacity as we do when it comes to social skills. If you want to continue seeing him, then you likely will have to find a way to tell him that you are not communicating well. Better to do it sooner than later, because if you are feeling annoyed – that means that this is something that needs to be addressed. You can also take control sometimes by leading the conversation – and maybe he will get the hint.
