Veteran Comes Out in His Obituary

Colonel Edward Thomas Ryan, a retired firefighter and decorated army veteran, has posthumously come out as gay in his own obituary, published by Albany Times Union. Ryan, who had a 25-year relationship with a man, shared his truth in a heartfelt personal note, explaining his lifelong fear of ostracism. He wrote, “I must tell you one more thing. I was gay all my life: through grade school, through high school, college, through life.” Now, he can truly rest in peace with his “secret” finally known.
