Miss Richfield 1981 is a drag legend and beauty professional who dedicates her life to the friendly citizens and responsible merchants of her hometown, Richfield, MN, “where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage.” This Midwestern maven wins over theater audiences with an interactive format that combines homespun warmth and edgy improv, leaving audiences in hysterics.
Her live performances received critical acclaim with The New York Post declaring Miss Richfield 1981 “the must-see act in Provincetown,” and Twincities.com noting “in these divided times, Miss R is tonic—and gin—for the soul.” In addition to selling out venues each year in top markets throughout the country, Miss Richfield has been a fixture in Provincetown, MA each summer. For over 20 seasons, she consistently sells out venues five nights a week. She also is a headline act with Atlantis Events cruise ships and resorts.
Miss Richfield reminds you that she is genuine, but many things around her are not! So, in her new show, “Phony Baloney,” Miss R explores how to navigate all things artificial including intelligence, flowers, and mayonnaise. With all-new songs and videos, and a healthy heap of audience interaction, the show will leave you appreciating the artificial while keeping a foothold in reality!
It was a pleasure to sit down with Miss Richfield 1981 for the 3 or 4th time.
I haven’t spoken to you in 2 years, what is new with you and your career?
Fortunately, I love my work! So, the last 2 years have been busy, busy! I’ve been traveling and performing my shows in front of live audiences! There is nothing better than connecting with my fans in Ptown, on ships with Atlantis Events, Palm Springs, New York and Ft Lauderdale!
What is your take on our president and our current political climate?
Well, I’ve never been a huge fan of orange! I’ve always felt it washes me out and makes me look pale. And that’s kind of how I feel politically now too!
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Beautiful, bingo babe and baritone! I guess that’s 4 words, but I think I’m worth it!
What do you do for fun?
Fun for me is working! As I said, my job is pretty darn fun! And traveling is the best way to make new friends. Other than that, I often enjoy rearranging and refreshing the plastic flowers that cover the hitch in front of my home. And my cat, Louis, keeps me busy since he recently figured out how to open all my kitchen cabinets.
Do you have a significant other?
No, still maintaining my purity and virtue for future beauty pageants!
You travel all over the world, do you have a favorite city or venue?
Other than Ptown, which is my home away from home, I always loved San Diego and Ft Lauderdale. Both Cities had great venues and welcoming audiences. Unfortunately, my San Diego venue closed during the pandemic and has not reopened for entertainers. So now it is Sunshine Cathedral first and foremost and forever!
What does the future hold for Miss Richfield 1981?
Work, work, work! That’s what keeps me young! Performing and traveling is my life today and hopefully for many more years to come! And thanks to all who continue to support me!
Are you excited about coming back to sunny Fort Lauderdale?
Sunshine Cathedral is one of my very favorite places to perform. You are all so lucky to have such a quality arts center and so many wonderful shows year round! It’s great on every level – technically and visually simply the best!
What should our readers expect from your show Phony Baloney at The Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts?
Expect to learn something! Phony Baloney is very up to date and modern, as I explain the intricacies of artificial intelligence. It’s also a little bittersweet, as it’s the last time I’ll be doing this show! This Baloney show has been a joy and leaving it behind is like moving on from a good friend. But Sunshine is the place for a great finale.
