Tuesday night was the 3rd installment of the newly formed LGBT Think Tank and in that meeting they revealed their new name, the Rainbow Business Coalition of Greater Fort Lauderdale. It was great to see some of the most well-known gay and gay-friendly business owners stepping up to the plate to form what is sure to be a phenomenal new organization. Wednesday I stopped by the Manor for the Valerie Tyson Band, the new headliners on Wednesdays, and they bring something to the gay community that I have never seen before in a weekly promotion. Valerie and the band developed into a powerful musical force that brings together all styles of music including R&B, jazz, disco, classic rock, swing, hip hop, Latin calypso and reggae. Make plans to check them out any Wednesday at the Manor (ValerieTysonBand.com). Thursday night a few of the Hotspots staff went over to Sidelines to celebrate Jennifer Morales’ birthday. As usual the sports bar was filled with sports aficionados as well as well wishers.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Jennifer many more happy birthdays! On Friday afternoon we were off to Fort Lauderdale Beach for the press conference where Mayor Jack Seiler announced celebration plans for the 50th anniversary of the filming of “Where the Boy’s Are” with Connie Francis. We met up with Miss Francis at the Bahia Mar Hotel where we had a chance to chat with her and introduce her to the hot boys we brought along for the photo shoot (thanks to Howard of FabScout). Memorial Day weekend will see huge celebrations including Connie Francis and special Hotspots Magazine hosted events marking the half century mark of the movie that put Fort Lauderdale on the map! This will be an event not to be missed, so stay tuned. Friday I went to Bill’s for Growl, which as usual was packed with bears, muscle bears and their admirers. The midnight contest this week was for best chest and there were some hot chests. In the end the winner was sexy Adrian from Argentina. Saturday night Georgie’s Alibi in St. Pete featured recording artist Crystal Waters live in concert to a crowd that spilled out onto to the streets. As usual Crystal turned it out as she rocked the bay area!

A new drag musical spoof and tribute to “The Golden Girls,” currently a hot-ticket item in Los Angeles, will have its East Coast premiere in February at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road. “The Golden Gays” explores the world of four older gay men who are obsessed with the famous foursome. Thanks to their equally dysfunctional therapist, they are able to indulge their obsession through a novel new therapy, which involves them all moving in together to live as the Golden Girls. L.A. Weekly said the show was “Outrageous, uproarious and over the top!” L.A. Splash called it, “A fast-paced bitchy good time!” Written by John Patrick Trapper, the musical spoof is directed by Lori Ness Quinn. The show has been performed several times in Los Angeles and Palm Springs. While spoofing the famous show is nothing new, critics have hailed this version as a wonderful tribute to the actors and writers who made the show famous. It sets out not only to bring them back to life, but also to share some trivia about the show and the people involved through song and spoof. Great care was taken in presenting all four of the original actors’ comedic abilities and multi-dimensionality.
