What’s Hot March 11, 2010

On Monday, February 22nd the annual Miss Gay Black USofA pageant and was held at J’s. It was a fab pageant and in the end local entertainer and my friend, Champagne Bordeaux, won her first national pageant and is the new Miss Gay Black USofA 2010. On Tuesday I was privileged enough to go see one of the true divas of our generation, Patty Lupone, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. To say her show was moving would be the understatement of the year. Thursday was the return of DJ Miik’s Cuchifrito now being held at Johnny’s. If the crowd was an indicator …

Mack Lunch celebrated its 5th anniversary at Trina at the Atlantic Hotel on Fort Lauderdale Beach. It was a sold out crowd once again. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Danny and DJ on 5 fabulous years and wish them many more years of success. Friday evening Noel Leon’s husband, David (Honey Love), celebrated his birthday at the Palace on South Beach with a small group of friends that included Misty Eyez, Harry Demasiado, Nikki Whyte and a few others all on hand to give him some birthday love.

After the party I headed to Kiehl’s on Lincoln Road for the final destination of Winter Party’s Passport to Lincoln Road. Kiehl’s was jam packed with cute boys all taking advantage of the 20% off everything in the store. In addition, Kiehl’s made a donation of 20% of all sales to the Task Force. Sunday afternoon Winter Party Weekend presented one of my favorite parties of the year, the beach party. After the opening set by DJ Brett Henrichsen, Brazilian DJ Ana Paula took over the turntables. I have heard good things about her, but she far exceeded any expectations I had. She played a perfect mix of music that kept the boys packed on the dance floor until the party ended. Everybody could not help but move to these high energy feel good songs.

Congratulations to the Winter Party and to DJ Ana Paula for a party that people will soon not forget! Sunday night the Manor presented the Oscars and in between commercials they presented the 1st annual Besties Awards honoring some of South Florida’s best, hosted by Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and Mikey V. of Design Star. Congratulations go out to all the winners, with a special nod to our own Peter Clark who won for Best Publisher.

Kareem Mortimer’s film “Children of God” will be premiering at the Miami International Film Festival tonight and tomorrow on South Beach. “Children of God” is an intimate, powerful drama that addresses the climate of homophobia in the Caribbean with a critical and compassionate look at violence and religion. The film follows three main characters: the religious zealot married to a secretly gay pastor, a young black Bahamian who fears the consequences of his sexual preference and a white Bahamian who is struggling with his sexual identity. Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa: Dancing on Hitler’s Grave! tells the story of Frannie Sheridan, a nice Catholic girl who grew up with dumpling soup and candlesticks on Fridays, Manischevitz-spiked eggnog at Christmas and a score of other traditions that led her to discover the truth: her parents were Holocaust survivors who decided to hide their Jewish heritage, even from their children. The strikingly original play is based on Sheridan’s real life story. The former stand-up comic leavens pathos with humor as she shows the hilarious cultural misunderstandings of her stalwart mother and her damaged but determined father. Eccentric neighbors and friends round out the cast of this one-woman show that resonates with anyone who has struggled with questions of identity and family. Arthur Hiller, director of “Love Story,” said of Frannie, “She moved me to tears and laughter, expertly performing a range of characters from her incredible family story.” “Frannie Sheridan is a gifted artist with an important and unusual story to tell,” says Dr. William Shulman, president of the Association of Holocaust Organizations. “Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa: Dancing on Hitler’s Grave” is at the  Colony Theater, 1040 Lincoln Road tonight at  8 pm and tomorrow at 7 pm. A talkback with Frannie will follow each show. Box Office 305 674-1040 or ColonyAndByronTheaters.com
