When was the first time you did drag and when did you decide it was what you wanted to do for a living?
The first time was in November of 2007 and it was an amazing experience and by the summer of 2008 I decided that this is what I wanted to do to live. In all honesty I am a lazy person, but I love doing drag so it was great for me.

How did you name yourself in drag?
Tyra came from my little cousin who was born premature and had a hard time breathing. We would have to call the ambulance every day as she was constantly fighting for her life. Symone came from Raven Symone, who I admire, and Sanchez is my drag family name.

Who were/are the major influences on your career in drag?
Well Beyonce, of course, and then Jasmine Bonet and Nicole Luv Dupree of Atlanta. Jasmine because she is so creative and Nicole because she is so tall (like I am) but is always beautiful and gracious.

What made you want to be on “RuPaul’s Drag Race?”
I knew it would open up new doors and I knew I would have a good shot at it because I have great skills and I learn quickly from other people.

How did you keep your focus throughout the competition?
Well I took it as a competition and did not hang out with the other girls after shooting. I would go back to my hotel room, watch television, rest and pray. I also did not let my emotions get involved.

How hard was it to be away from your son for so long?
Very hard because I am used to seeing him all the time and it was crazy not to have him around.

How nervous were you when you were shooting the final episode?

Extremely nervous and you can see it on my face. I was walking with my head down as if I was a kid in trouble. Don’t get me wrong, I was very confident, but I did not want to lose.

At the very end it seems like you were going to pass out. What happened?
It was like I had an out of body experience. I was so shocked and excited I forgot to breathe.

Who was your favorite guest judge and why?
Niecy Nash, because I love her on “Reno 911” and “Clean House.” I also love the big flower she always wears in her hair and the fact that we both have big, beautiful lips.

Who from the show have you become friends with?
I am friends with all the girls now. It’s like we are all sisters; one big happy family. Morgan and I talk a lot and recently JuJuBee and I are becoming good friends.

Do you get hit on more in or out of drag?

Way more out of drag.

Are you single or in a relationship? What do you look for in a man?

I am currently in a relationship with a wonderful guy, but generally I just look for men to be honest.

What’s the next step for Tyra?
I would love to get into a movie or television show and I am in the plans of starting my own fashion line, which will be called Willyaam Xa’vier, catering to club and business wear for women.

You can catch Tyra and some of the other cast members on the Absolut Tour, which will be kicking off on May 14th in Denver and tours select cities across the United States featuring exceptional Absolut cocktails.
