What’s HOT! South Florida August 5, 2010

The last 2 months have been so crazy for me, traveling across the state many times for important events, that this past week I decided I was going to give my body a break and stay local. Last Tuesday Johnny’s presented a big birthday bash for general manager AJ Cross. As he does every year, AJ made his birthday a benefit. This year the beneficiary was Sunserve, a social service agency providing many types of services to GLBT families in Broward County. The event was hosted by Electra with special performances by recording artist John Minnis, Misty Eyez, Alandra Matthews, TP Lords, Richard Cortez, Mia Sangria, Gemini Stone and many more. Wednesday was the monthly GLCC/Pride Center at Equality Park’s Founders’ Circle reception. This month it was at the beautiful Red Door Spa at the Galleria Mall. They were giving away complimentary manicures and chair massages.

This month it was at the beautiful Red Door Spa at the Galleria Mall. They were giving away complimentary manicures and chair massages. The DJ, bartender and bar was donated by Johnny’s. The Center would like to give a special thanks to the Red Door Spa for donating the space and being so accepting to our community. Friday I went to Living Room, which was once again packed with cute boys, to see the Diva JuJubee from “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Well, she did not disappoint and put on a fabulous show. Afterwards she hung out in the VIP all night.

Saturday I went to The Manor for the Lea Delaria stand up which was a benefit for the Rising Action Theatre. Lea was hilarious and made just over 2 hours go by so quickly. Since I was at The Manor I stayed there for the evening, first enjoying the sounds of the Karina Iglesias band live in the Windsor Room. At 10 pm both the Epic Nightclub and the Latin Lounge and Patio opened up and quickly filled up. The Epic Nightclub featured sexy DJ Bill Bennett celebrating his birthday and the Latin Room featured resident DJ Larry Larr. The entire club was still packed when I left at 2:30.

Sidelines Sports Bar’s Sizzlin’ Summer Cook-Off Finals held on Sunday, July 25th concluded with a surprising twist. The Cook-Off Competition, held each month during the past summer, brought some of our area’s most aspiring chefs with their unique recipes of chili, BBQ ribs, and chicken wings to Sidelines Sports Bar. After the spirited three-month cooking contests, the finals were held where the top three winners of each month’s category competed for the grand prize – a deluxe, stainless-steel, BBQ gas grill. The winners were announced after the five guest judges’ scores were tallied. The judges included Jason (Rosie’s Bar & Grill), Mark H. (Mark’s List), Mike T. (Hotspots Magazine), Nick D. (loyal customer), and Paul D. (loyal customer). The winning chef, garnering the highest score, was James Morris. James made the announcement to Laurie and Marty, co-owners of Sidelines that he wanted to donate his prize to The Poverello Center so they can offer it as a prize in a raffle at their upcoming Bowl-A-Thon on August 7th.
