What’s HOT! South Florida August 12, 2010

On August 3rd the monthly Mack Lunch was held at the beautiful China Grille on the 17th Street Causeway overlooking the intercoastal.  Congrats to Danny and DJ for once again having a sold out business luncheon. A few special mentions are to: 1) Casey, who I went to graduate school with, for leaving his job and going for his dream to become a pilot, 2) to Tom Runyon’s mother, who recently moved down to South Florida to be near her successful son and 3) to the beautiful Lauralina just because I always love seeing her gorgeous smile! On Wednesday the guys at Atomic/Boom had a birthday party for GM Chris Burdekin with free chicken wings, pizza, cake and of course Russell behind the bar serving it up as only he can.  Happy birthday to my friend Chris and I wish him many more to come! Wednesday late night I went by Voodoo Lounge for their new promotion …

Wednesday late night I went by Voodoo Lounge for their new promotion, Whip It Out Wednesdays starring DJ Daisy Deadpetals who also has brought back her famous Wheel of Dare. This is a fun new night you must put on your things to do list! Friday night I stopped by Johnny’s, which by the way was door to door people, to see Channel 1 Releasing’s Jeremy Bilding performing live. I then headed down to Club Sugar for their fabulous Fridays hosted by Milancita.com and starring DJ Jarell with shows by TP and Sasha. This is such a HOT Friday night party I am not sure they could even fit anybody else in the door, so get their early!

I couldn’t stay too late because I had to get up early Saturday morning for the 20th annual Poverello Bowl-a-thon at Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac. As usual this event was packed with people all there to raise money for this good cause. At the event they announced that they raised over $12,000 and that did not include online pledges or money that came in from the raffles and 50/50. When they tally everything I will report on the exact amount. Hey, I am just happy I broke a 100 score…yay me!

HOT STUFF

Latinos Salud (LatinosSalud.org ) has won a $1.3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to immediately initiate new HIV prevention programs that will serve Broward County’s gay and bisexual Latino communities. Latinos Salud Executive Director Stephen Fallon told this me, “Broward County is Ground Zero in our nation’s HIV epidemic.  For the health of our communities, we need prevention programs that are delivered by professionals who understand the culture and values of their gay Latino peers.  Latinos Salud will launch two new HIV prevention programs to meet this need.”  All of Latinos Salud’s staff members are Latino, except for Fallon, who speaks conversational Spanish. Fallon added, “We are excited that the CDC chose our agency to carry out these vitally-needed services.  For the past six years, no Broward-based agency had won CDC funding. Latinos Salud is the youngest of South Florida agency selected for funding.” Dr. Fallon and Mr. Narváez founded Latinos Salud in 2008 to address an urgent gap in local prevention services specifically targeting Broward’s Latino gay communities;  The agency currently operates an HIV prevention program called “Somos” (which means “We Are!”) for gay Latinos, age 30 and younger.  Funded by the Florida Department of Health, the Somos program offers a safe space for community members to find peer support, and education about reducing risks of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases. The group currently has 300 members.

getOutFL invites everyone; singles, couples, families, new in town, just visiting, and anyone who wants to getOut and join them in having fun.  People of all ages are getting out with getOutFL, South Florida’s newest LGBT and friends organization.  The group formerly known as Venture Out has 1500 members. Plans are to provide a varied calendar of activities ranging from outdoor and active activities such as hiking, boating, camping, and bowling to casual indoor social gatherings like dinners, parties, movie nights, wine tasting and community volunteer/philanthropic activities. Membership is free but many events will have an associated cost. The group offers an alternative to the bar scene to meet new friends, network, and socialize while taking advantage of all South Florida has to offer. You never know who you might meet… For information please call Rick Zlotziver at 954-461-9016 or visit getOutFL.com

From award-winning director Rodrigue Jean comes this mesmerizing look into the lives of those who work the male sex trade industry on the streets of one of my favorite cities, Montreal. “Men For Sale” is a frank and fascinating documentary that chronicles a year in the lives of 11 men- most of them in their early 20’s – as they attempt to explain how they all arrives at the same profession.

With a humanistic eye the film uncovers the vulnerabilities of its subjects as they struggle to affirm their masculinity and make sense of their conflicting sexual practices. Some of them envision themselves escaping the sex trade industry, while others feel like prisoners in a vicious cycle of drug use and prostitution. The men for sale pursue their hardscrabble lives, knowing their prospects for the future are dim. An unflinching portrait with neither voyeurism nor false sympathy, “Men for Sale” acknowledges those society prefers to ignore. By artfully weaving together piercing confessionals and scenes of Montreal’s nighttime cityscape,  Jean creates a dreamlike vision of a rarely-glimpsed world – one that often goes unnoticed even when in plain sight. The documentary is 145 minutes and can be ordered now at BreakingGlassPictures.com or on Amazon.com for only $24.95 with a street date of August 31.
