Let There Be Balloons, a new, light-hearted but poignant musical that takes a look at some of today’s pressing social issues–makes its world premiere at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, December 7 at 8 pm.  The musical covers issues such as the impact of the global economy, unemployment, the brave new world of reproductive technology, autism and gay parenting. Created by the Lovewell Theatre Project (a division of Lovewell Institute) Let There Be Balloons tells the story of Sarah, an adventurous young woman who returns to her small Ohio hometown after a life-altering stint working in Africa.  Coming home, she must unexpectedly confront another disastrous situation. The pride of her family and her home town—a large balloon factory—is shutting down and its operations are being shifted overseas. Most jobs in the town are suddenly vanishing. To earn money to help her family out of their financial calamity, Sarah makes a daring move — she signs on to be the surrogate mother for a gay couple in New York. She soon finds herself caught up in the heartfelt, and sometimes hilarious, drama of not just her own family but also the new, non-traditional one she is helping to create.  Additional performances will be held on December 8 and 9 at 8pm, and weekend matinees on December 10 and 11, at 2 pm. Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for students and seniors and can be ordered through TicketLeap.com or LoveWell.org. This production is sponsored by Funding Arts Broward.
