Last Tuesday night, J and I went to Pinche Taqueria, the new Mexican restaurant on Wilton Drive. Pinche has two popular locations in New York City and this is the first location in Florida. We were excited to check it out since every time we’ve passed, it has been packed. The bright, open-air establishment was packed the night we were there for dinner and as soon as we walked in, we could tell the place had great energy.
Pinche me! Authentic Mexican food in a fun atmosphere at Pinche Taqueria
That evening, I was in a pretty bad mood. I had just come back from a mini-vacation and was bitter that it was over so soon. Cut to 20 minutes in at Pinche and I was smiling away, sipping Pinche’s Signature Skinny Margarita ($8) and chair dancing (to J’s embarrassment) to a Britney remix. Pinche has a party atmosphere. It’s colorful, cheery and has a great, friendly vibe.
We were immediately served complimentary tortilla chips with a side of salsa and a side of pico de gallo. The sauces were on the thinner side – no chunky salsa here – but had good flavor. The pico de gallo was a bit spicier and I prefered it to the traditional salsa. We then ordered their guacamole (small $6.95, large $8.95) since we both love the stuff and were really impressed by the dip. Pinche’s guac is made from fresh avocado, onion, cilantro, tomatillo, lime and special seasoning. It was chunky, delicious and seasoned perfectly. When you go to Pinche, you have to order up some. If you don’t, you’re missing out!
J and I also tried the Yucca Fries (small $4.95, large $6.95) which are served with cilantro mayo and jalapeno ketchup. Both sauces were tasty. J prefered the mellow flavors of the cilantro mayo and I preferred the kick of the jalapeno ketchup. If they sold it by the bottle, I would surely buy it and use it on everything. That’s right, I said everything.
We stopped our dipping extravaganza to place our entrée orders. J went with a new addition to Pinche’s menu, the Arrachera Steak ($13.95), which is skirt steak marinated in tequila and garlic, grilled and sliced. J, who is obsessed with skirt steak and has trouble finding places that cook it to his liking, was very, very pleased with his steak. I tried a few bites and agreed that Pinche knows how to make a tender, flavorful steak. The marinade really made the flavors pop. The skirt steak was served with a side of rice and refried beans.
I ordered the Taco al Pastor ($2.95) which is spit-grilled pork, but they also offer Taco de Carnitas ($2.95), which is braised pork. The tasty spit-grilled pork had a spicy flavor, and like all of their tacos, served on a soft corn tortilla with onions, cilantro and guacamole. I also ordered the Taco de Pescado ($3.95), which is a fish taco, topped with cabbage and cilantro dressing. The fish was breaded and crispy and went well with the dressing and cabbage. What I really liked about the tacos at Pinche was that they are served on soft corn tortillas. Up until about four years ago, I had only had flour tortillas and crunchy corn taco shells. Soft corn tortillas add a special flavor and ever since I tried my first one, I haven’t gone back to boring flour or crunchy corn.
As a side, I ordered the Elote ($3.50), which is grilled corn on the cob with Mexican lime mayo sprinkled with cotija cheese and chili powder. Grilled corn is always a delicious treat, but the combination of lime mayo, salty cheese and spicy chili powder put this side dish over the edge.
As I mentioned earlier, I ordered up Pinche’s Signature Skinny Margarita ($8) because I know that you, dear readers, would be disappointed if I didn’t try any of the signature drinks. The “skinny” version was made with Herradura Blanco Tequila, Agave Nectar and lime juice. It didn’t taste like a diet drink and it gave me a buzz, so, two thumbs up!
Pinche Taqueria also offers a breakfast menu (from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and a lunch menu (also until 4 p.m.). Delivery is also offered.
This new establishment is a fun addition to the drive and is definitely worth a try!
