Jobsite Theater starts the 2013-14 season with the groundbreaking, Obie Award-winning cult-hit rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, playing Sept. 6-29 in the Shimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, where Jobsite is the resident theater company.
Jobsite Theater starts the 2013-14 season with the groundbreaking, Obie Award-winning cult-hit rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, playing Sept. 6-29 in the Shimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa, where Jobsite is the resident theater company.
With a book by James Cameron Mitchell and lyrics and music by Stephen Trask, Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of “internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall-smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just “an angry inch.” This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (née Hansel) in the form of a rock concert/stand-up cabaret routine backed by her husband Yitzhak and the hard-rocking glam band “The Angry Inch.” It’s a rollercoaster ride: funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life his given them an inch when they deserved a mile.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch stars Spencer Meyers (Hedwig), Amy Gray (Yitzhak), Jonathan Cho (guitars, keys, backup vocals), Jana Doan (bass, backup vocals) and Woody Bond (drums). Meyers, Gray and Cho are all Jobsite veterans. Cho most recently appeared in the Shimberg in Jobsite’s Much Ado About Nothing and Hat Trick’s Neville’s Island. Meyers and Gray have both starred in Jobsite’s musicals Pericles: Prince of Tires and Gorey Stories, among many others. Doan is currently also the bassist for the Tampa rock outfit The Groves, and Bond plays drums for just about “every ska band in the region.” Jobsite Producing Artistic Director David M. Jenkins directs and designs the video. Matthew Ray serves as Associate Director. Set and lights are furnished by Brian Smallheer, costumes by Katrina Stevenson with Scott Belowsky serving as a special creative consultant on the production.
Jobsite is planning on working with several GLBTQA organizations in the area over the course of the run, offering an array of additional programs surrounding this production ranging from fundraisers to pre/post show discussions and beyond. Hedwig and the Angry Inch runs Sept. 6-29, in the Shimberg Playhouse at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts. Performances are Thursday – Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Regularly priced tickets are $28 and are available at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office, by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or online at www.strazcenter.org. Rush tickets for students, seniors, military and Theatre Tampa Bay members are $14, and are available on remaining seats as of 30 minutes prior to curtain with cash and valid ID at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office. Preview performances will be held Sept. 4-5 at 8, with all tickets priced at $14. Season tickets are currently on sale for a six-play package for substantial savings.
