Spotlight on 12 New Releases

The weather has been getting hot really early this year! Take a break from the heat and the humidity and see a movie. Springtime offers a lot of great new releases, and I’ve taken the time to pick twelve movies I’m sure you’re going to love. Keep this list handy when you’re trying to figure out what to see in theaters!

MARCH

The Divergent Series: Insurgent

The first Divergent film shot Shailene Woodley to international stardom. In this continuation of the Divergent saga, Tris and Four are on the lam and they have to figure out what the big secret was that caused Tris’s family to sacrifice their own lives. When they do that, they can save their own lives. In theaters March 20.

Cupcakes

This fun foreign film comes from the people who made the gay love story Yossi & Jagger. In this movie, six friends from Tel Aviv are fans of the fictional “UniverSong” contest (modeled after Eurovision). When they think they can produce a better entry, they record one on a phone and send it in. Limited release starting March 27.

Serena

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in this dark period piece. Set in 1929, a happily married couple settles in to raise a family and build a business empire. When the couple learns they can’t have the children they wanted, the wife sets out to kill the woman who gave birth to her husband’s first son. In theaters March 27.

APRIL

Furious 7

This is the first Fast and Furious film to be released since Paul Walker’s tragic death in 2013 (he does star in this, his final film). This movie continues the franchise’s reputation for speed, adrenaline, mystery and intrigue. Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also star. In theaters April 3.

Ex Machina

The writer of the acclaimed film 28 Days Later makes his debut as a director with Ex Machina, a film about two men who fall under the spell of a female android that they created, who has advanced artificial intelligence and striking beauty. Will the machine win a battle of wits over man? In theaters April 10.

The Longest Ride

Based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, a bull rider and an art student, who are in love, are at a crossroads in their relationship. As if fate stepped in, their paths cross with an old man who has a lot of stories to share about the enduring relationship he has with his wife. In theaters April 10.

True Story

James Franco and Jonah Hill star in a suspenseful drama involving a reporter who investigates the biggest story of his life — finding the man who stole his identity. Once he finds him, he doesn’t stay in one place for long, leading the reporter to track him down and end the game once and for all. In theaters April 17.

The Forger

John Travolta stars in this drama thriller about a former art prodigy who goes to jail for petty theft. Once he learns that his son is dying, he will do absolutely anything to get out of prison, and when he gets a chance to buy his way out, he takes it. Will he make his break in time? In theaters April 24.

MAY

Welcome to Me

Kristen Wiig, who you loved in Saturday Night Live and Bridesmaids, stars in this heartwarming comedy about a woman with Borderline Personality Disorder who suddenly finds herself a lottery winner. She immediately goes off her meds and starts her own talk show. In theaters May 1.

Hot Pursuit

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara star in this action comedy. A hard-as-nails cop (Witherspoon) is tasked with the job of protecting the sultry wife of a former drug kingpin (Vergara) as they are pursued across Texas by people out to kill both of them. In theaters May 8.

Pitch Perfect 2

Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and the rest of the gang are back in this fun sequel. The Barden Bellas are searching for a cappella glory, and they think they can get it by entering an international competition. They aren’t bothered by the fact that no American team has won before — they’ll be the first! In theaters May 15.

This film comes to you from the director of Bridesmaids and The Heat, and features the talents of Melissa McCarthy. A CIA analyst on desk duty, Susan (McCarthy) is thrown into some of the scariest moments of her life after she volunteers to thwart a destructive global event. In theaters May 22.
