Interview: Why We Love Drag Star Taina Norell

What was the first drag show you saw and tell me about the experience?

The first drag show I saw was in 2005 at Club Metro, which was owned back then by James Brown (my fairy godfather). I was blown away by the beauty of Lashes, Syndel, Alexis Gabrielle Sherrington, just to name a few.

When did you decide you wanted to do drag and when did you realize it would be a profession?

I knew from that very first moment I saw that show in Club Metro that I wanted to be on that stage and entertain for my community. Ever since then I have been “twirling” around the nation.

Who is your drag mother and who is your favorite queen other than your drag mother and why?

My drag mother is the legendary Erika Norell. I can’t name just one queen other than my mother as there are so many. Some of the ones I love or loved (some are no longer with us) are: Erica Andrews, Tajma Hall, Necole Phillips, Danielle Hunter, Amy Demilo, Esme Russell, and Shae Shae Lareese.

What’s your favorite number to perform and why?

I love performing anything by Whitney Houston; I can feel her energy all around me.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in drag?

I would have to say that the best that have happened to me in drag is that we are very fortunate to constantly meeting new people and touch their hearts. I strongly believe in the saying “Treat others how you want to be treated.” So I have to say I am thankful for each and every one of those souls I have touched and made a difference in their lives. It’s the most rewarding feeling I have ever experienced.

What differentiates you from other Queens?

Ouch! This is a hard one. We are all unique in our own way. But I do believe that we are all brothers and sisters at the end of the day.

Tell me something most people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know I actually graduated from medical assistant school. I wanted to give something to my mother and make her feel proud of me. I recently became intrigued with fashion, although from all my postings on Facebook I suspect this is no longer a secret. Fashion has been something that has always been in the back of my mind, and I am proud of myself for pushing forward, beating the demons, and making it a reality.

What does the future hold?

I wish I knew the answer to this question, but for now am staying focused on starting fashion school and graduating as a Fashion Designer. I am very intrigued and excited about the future, but I rather live this very moment right now.

Why We Love Her:

  1. She is Pretty, oh so pretty!
  2. She follows her dreams
  3. She has a wonderful husband who is not in the club scene at all
  4. She has a special bond with her mother
