RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 12, Episode 7: Brita Filer

This week started out with some backlash from last week’s challenge as some of the queen’s feelings were still hurt. The next day Ru came into the work room to announce this week there would be no mini challenge and the maxi challenge was “Madonna: The Unauthorized Rusical” – where each queen had to be Madonna from a period in her career. Surprisingly they were able to agree on who should take which Madonna pretty quickly. The runway look was your best Michelle Visage, and the special guest judges were U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and supermodel Winnie Harlow.

The top 3 were Jan, Gigi and Crystal, with GiGi taking the win. Now it’s very rare in 12 seasons (and 4 all-stars season) when I disagree with Ru about who should have won, and I love GiGi and think she has a very good chance of winning this season, but the clear winner this week was Jan. The bottom 2 were Brita and Heidi with Brita sashaying away. It was a pleasure to sit down with Brita for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

It’s been an interest since I was 19, and then it really sparked in me when I met Alaska and her mom. However, I didn’t move forward. As an actor, I performed in Cinderella as a step sister and that really lit a fire under me, and I came back to the city and started doing drag. The way I picked my name is I met a girl named Brita, and I thought Brita Filter would be a great name and the rest is history.

Q: How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen?

I applied once and it felt amazing when I got chosen. It was a dream come true.

Q: Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?

It was a lot of hard work, and it was definitely the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. However, it was an amazing experience as I learned so much about myself and who I am. It helped me to become a better person in the long run. All the girls became really close, even Aiden and I, we are all sisters.

  1. Is there something you wish you did different?

I wish I got out of my head, as I was so stressed. I feel like sometimes I was not having fun and drag is supposed to be fun. I have been seeing a therapist to try and relieve this anxiety I have.

  1. You mentioned it a few times on camera, tell me about this entertainer of the year award?

It’s a prestigious award that’s voted on by your peers in NYC who are involved in nightlife. I won it a couple years ago, and it really meant the world to me as I love my community a lot.

  1. Your Nicki Minaj parody is iconic, how did this come about? (for those of you who haven’t seen it, rush to Brita’s Instagram page)

I love theater and I love embracing pop culture. I also love Nicki so I wanted to do a homage to her.

Q: What’s your marital status?

I have a boyfriend who is wonderful and caring and he is perfect. He lives in L.A., but we go back and forth.

Q: Who do you want to win?

Jaida Essence Hall as she is 100% herself all the time. She makes everything she wears, and she is also not afraid to stick up for people even though she may get backlash. She is a true queen, and I adore her.

Q: What’s ahead for Brita?

After this Quarantine, I really want to do giant production numbers and tour the world. I would also love to do some scripted content and writing. I love telling stories in drag. I think it’s time for a Broadway drag musical.
