Men’s Summer Hair Trends

Historically male hair trends have not been as exciting as women’s, but there have been some highlights through the years.

Pompadours, mop tops, mohawks, Jheri curls, mullets, hi-top fades, crew cuts and Caesar cuts are some looks that have made an impact through the decades and some of these looks have come back numerous times.

Stylist Stephen Anthony has been doing hair for 30 years and has seen a lot of looks.

“One trend that I despise that stuck around is ‘The Ricky Martin,’” Anthony said, referring to the star’s look in his “Livin’ La Vida Loca” video.

Anthony works at Fantasy Barber Shop on Wilton Drive. He said the barber cuts are a big trend and he sees a lot of skin fades. Another trend is the cut with a part razored into the hair.

He said regarding trends, in Hollywood it’s one thing and locally it is something else. He mentioned that stars like Ryan Seacrest are letting their hair grow a bit longer but he hasn’t seen that look locally.

“There’s a handful of guys who like to experiment,” he said. “For the most part, guys get stuck in one look and they cling on to it.”

When asked about popular hair trends for men, stylist Tory DeSilvio, of A Suite Salon in Boca Raton, said she sees a lot of “shaved sides and long on top hair.”

DeSilvio said she also sees a lot of long lived-in hair, which is her personal favorite.

Darren Thompson, lead stylist at Dick’s Service Station in Oakland Park, said that texture is the top trend.

“Hair has been growing out over the last year leading to clients wanting to do something more, something different with it,” he said. “Deep texture point cutting and disconnected hairstyles with bald side shaves have been the top sellers.”

He said that “bold, youthful mid-fades with razor lines adding their own unique style are perfect for the younger Floridians wanting an exciting look for summer.”

Regarding facial hair, Thompson said that bears and their beards have been a challenge with mask wearing.

“A lot of those beards have changed to goatees and a porn stash,” he said. “We expect by this fall beards will be back with well-groomed lines and natural color as men venture back to the barber after their year long bear hibernation!”
