Q&A: Nikki Glaser Comes to Kravis Center

Stand-up comedian, actress, podcast host, radio host and television host – Nikki Glaser does it all, and now she’s taking her talents on the road with Nikki Glaser: The Good Girl Tour, coming to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts this Saturday, June 10 at 7pm. Tickets are on sale now at kravis.org.

Nikki Glaser is one of the funniest female voices in comedy today. For over a decade at clubs across the country, and as the host of three hit podcasts, Nikki has been honing her shockingly honest, no-holds-barred style of comedy. In that time, she has also executive produced and hosted two TV shows: “Nikki & Sara Live” for MTV (a female-driven pop culture sketch comedy show) and “Not Safe with Nikki Glaser” for Comedy Central (a daring comedic show that tackled taboo sexual topics). In addition to her shows, Nikki has multiple stand-up specials and late-night TV appearances in which she jokes about her most humiliating moments as a woman in the modern world. Nikki’s past and current struggles with anorexia, depression and anxiety are fair game in both her stand-up and during in-depth interviews like “WTF” with Marc Maron and “JRE” with Joe Rogan. Glaser has become a complete open book on mic – and not just for the laughs; she’s also adamant about being the voice for women that she yearned for as a young, confused, adolescent herself. You can currently find Nikki flexing her over-sharing muscle as the daily host of the podcast “You Up with Nikki Glaser: A Hit of Pod.”

It was a pleasure to speak with Nikki just a few days before her performance here in South Florida.

At what age did you begin performing?

I began performing at 18. I was always smart and had interesting observations and I was always honest, but I was not an extrovert early on. However, I was surrounded by funny, and I absorbed a lot of it and ultimately, I got steered into doing stand-up comedy.

What was your first paid gig?

This guy saw me do my 3-minute set in a local comedy club, where I admittedly killed it and asked me to do this gig which was hour long sets at a college 3 hours away. He paid me like 15,000 for 10 sets which was a lot of money for me. Since I didn’t have an hour set I brought comic friends with me and paid them.

When did you know performing would be your career?

As soon as I saw Jennifer Aniston on “Friends,” I knew I wanted to be her, and I would be a performer.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you on the road?

I have my friends open for me, so I get to travel with them and that’s the best part of being on the road.

What differentiates you from other comedians?

I think that I have a more conversational style of my delivery. I kind of talk about things and say stuff without a performative way. I embody the way I feel in that moment and bring authenticity to it.

Describe yourself in 3 words?

Impatient, kind, and disorganized.

What do you do for fun?

I play guitar and sing, and I am training to be a better singer. I am as obsessed about learning how to sing well as I was when I started stand up. I also love to watch TV with my boyfriend, and I am a Swifty, as I have seen Taylor Swift 4 times on this tour and about to see her 2 more time.

Is there anything we would be surprised to know about you?

You will be surprised to know I am really nice. I am known for my roasts, but I don’t enjoy doing it, and I don’t do it at my shows.

What does the future hold?

Imminent climate change disaster, mass famine, water shortages, and I have a special that will be coming out next year.

What should our readers expect from Nikki Glaser: The Good Girl Tour

This show is what is leading to my next special and it’s a hole new hour and a half of material that isn’t on any other special I have done. It’s all my favorite new stuff. These jokes are worked out and kill. But I never start with the same joke and there is no set list. I just walk out and start talking.
