Were you always a performer, even as a child, or when did you catch the bug?
I am the third of 3 children, and my two sisters are basketball players, and I am afraid of sports so I had to perform if I wanted any attention. I have had a really lucky run by ultimately being a showoff.
What was your first paid gig, and how much did you get paid?
I was a singing waiter on the “Spirit of Chicago” on Lake Michigan’s coast. I wore a gold lame vest. I don’t remember how much I got paid. That was also the summer I had my first drink.
At what point did you realize entertaining would be your career?
I went to music and dance school, so my intention was to do it, and I just followed the flow, and I was lucky to keep getting work. So there really was never a moment, I just kept working.
You have done stage, television, and film is there one you like better?
I love TV and film, but I am a theater baby all the way!
Do you remember how it felt when you won your Tony Award for “Hello Dolly?”
Yeah, it was a special night because 15 years prior I was in my first Broadway show and Sutton Foster won a Tony and then that night she presented me with my Tony, so it was amazing for me.
Getting nominated is a win and I have been lucky 3 times now. However, getting the trophy is nice. It’s the most beautiful acknowledgement from the community I had dreamt of being a part of.
Since you are an out and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, our readers want to know are you single or taken?
It’s the one thing I choose not to talk about…I like to keep that part of my life my business.

What do you do for fun?
I like hanging out with friends. As a matter of fact, I just came from singing at The Perelman Performing Arts Center, which is the new performing arts center at Ground Zero. Right afterwards I went to just hang out with my 2 best friends and talked about our feelings.
I am a bit of a proud slut, and I like sex positivity. I am over the puritanical choke and slut-shaming. I love sex and I think everybody does so lets just enjoy it.
What should our readers expect from your performances at Hunters?
My Music director is one of my dearest friends, Mary-Mitchell Campbell, and we make it our goal no matter how big the venue is to make you feel like you are in your living room. Mary has been the music director for a million shows and she and I work so well together. I promise it will be a chill joyful concert.
Is there something I didn’t ask you that you want to talk about?
I am very excited about my new musical “Walk on through: Confessions of a Museum Novice” which will be premiering at MCC Theater on Nov 13. We are hoping to take it to Broadway after that. It’s an exploration of life and love.
