Out Florida Rep Michele Rayner Defends Vote Banning Youth Access To Social Media

The Florida House has passed a bill that forbids social media platforms from allowing accounts for young teens and mandates age verification of accounts from others. The bill prohibits those under 16 from creating new social media accounts and mandates the deletion of existing accounts held by minors under 16. The bill received bipartisan support and got passed with a 106-13 vote. It has now moved to the Republican-controlled Senate. Democratic Representative Michele Rayner, who is openly gay, is facing criticism for endorsing the ban, as she played a role in crafting this controversial legislation. An LGBTQ+ activist, and one of the Queer News Tonight anchors Maxx Fenning of PRISM Florida, argues the bill may hinder youth access to crucial sexual health resources.
