Queer God Squad: What Do I Do When I Start To Go To Church And Feel Worse?

Church can be an uplifting experience for many, but there are communities of faith that are not supportive. In a recent post online, a woman and her husband who were previously atheists converted to Christianity and began attending church. They complain that many in the church seem friendly on the surface, but then are condescending when it comes to the husband’s tattoos, lack of knowledge of prayers or traditions, and lack of a past of going to church. After church, they frequently are made to feel that they aren’t “perfect” enough to be “good Christians.” For queer and LGBTQ+ members of traditional church report that while they may be loyal to god it is hard to be loyal to church when so many speak badly and treat their attendance so poorly. What do we all do when we attend church and we feel worse about the community around us and about our faith?
