Island City Stage kicks off Season 13 with a bang, bringing James Ijames’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Fat Ham to South Florida audiences from April 3rd to May 4th. Co-produced with Brévo Theatre and GableStage, and generously supported by the Warten Foundation, this South Florida premiere delivers a bold, hilarious, and deeply moving reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In Fat Ham, the Danish court is swapped for a Southern backyard cookout where Juicy, a Black queer young man, grapples with identity, family expectations, and the sudden appearance of his father’s ghost demanding revenge.
As barbecue smoke lingers and disco beats thump, Juicy must decide whether to continue the cycle of violence or forge his own path. This historic collaboration between Island City Stage, Brévo Theatre, and GableStage marks a significant moment for South Florida’s LGBTQ and Black theater communities. Audiences can catch Fat Ham on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday matinees for $43, while Saturday and Sunday performances are $48. The show runs 1 hour and 35 minutes with no intermission. Some of the shows are already sold out! For tickets and more details, visit islandcitystage.org.
