Illinois Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller is under fire again—this time for calling Pride Month “evil” and pushing a resolution to replace it with what she calls “Family Month.” Speaking to the far-right Christian nationalist group, The Wallbuilders, Miller said,
“I believe God has left us on Earth as believers to overcome evil with good and Pride Month, in my opinion, is evil. The left hijacked it to promote gender confusion, to promote indecency, hyper-sexualizing our children and actually grooming our children. So, I decided I’m going to reclaim it for the family.”
But let’s be clear: Pride Month wasn’t hijacked—it was born out of protest. Queer and trans people, especially those most marginalized, led the way, fighting police brutality and systemic queerphobia. Pride has always leaned toward progress and liberation, not repression and control.
Miller’s so-called “Family Month” resolution is backed by anti-LGBTQ organizations including the Family Research Council and Moms for America.
She claims,
“By recognizing June as Family Month, we reject the lie of ‘Pride’ and instead honor God’s timeless and perfect design.”
Miller has a long record of targeting queer rights. She’s pushed anti-trans bills, voted against marriage equality, and referred to trans Congresswoman Sarah McBride as “a gentleman.” As LGBTQ communities celebrate resilience and love, Miller’s remarks are a stark reminder of what’s still at stake.
