Queer God Squad Celebrates the Lesbian Archbishop of Wales

The recent election of Cherry Vann as the Archbishop of Wales marks a historic and transformative moment for the Anglican Church in the UK. As the first woman to hold an archbishop position in the UK, her appointment represents a significant milestone in the ongoing progress of gender equality within the church. Vann’s election is especially notable as she is also the first openly LGBTQ+ person to lead a British Anglican jurisdiction, a decision that signals a major step towards greater inclusion and modernization.

Her path to this role began decades ago, when she was among the first women ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1994. She was made a deacon five years before that. She spent 11 years as an Archdeacon and 5 years as a bishop. She now begins her new ministry as the Archbishop of Wales. Vann faces the important task of building trust and fostering reconciliation after years of sex scandals and abuse in the Church, a mission she has embraced with a focus on healing.

Her historic appointment not only celebrates her personal achievement but also opens a new chapter for the Church, demonstrating a commitment to a more diverse and accepting future.
