The Ministry and Impact of Gay, Black Priest: Rev. Joseph Wallace-Williams

Reverend Joseph Wallace-Williams is a significant figure in the ongoing conversation about faith, identity, and inclusion within the Christian church. A native of Louisiana, he attended university in his home state and went to seminary in Tennessee. He served as a curate (assistant pastor) in a couple of southern churches and spent a few years in a New York monastery. He became a symbol of resilience and an advocate for change.

As the first Black and first gay rector (senior pastor) of the Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany in Philadelphia, his ministry provides a powerful example of a welcoming and affirming community. He has dedicated his work to ensuring all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can find a spiritual home.

Wallace-Williams’s public presence and unwavering commitment have helped to open doors for other LGBTQ+ individuals seeking to serve in ministry and have inspired many to reconcile their faith with their identity.
