“Boots” Tells a Closeted Marine’s Story — and a Nation’s Search for Belonging

A new Netflix drama, Boots, brings to life the true story of a closeted Marine in 1990, based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine. Starring Parenthood and 13 Reasons Why alum Miles Heizer, the series explores identity, belonging, and courage before “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Heizer said, “I was so nervous. I’ve never played a real person…Greg told me up front, ‘I want this to be Cameron’s story, not Greg’s story.’” Creator Andy Parker says, “The question we wanted to dramatize was: Who gets to belong? Who gets to be an American?” Boots is already on Netflix!
