Remembering Your First Gay Movie Gathering At Midnight Saturday With Rocky Horror Picture Show

For fifty years, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has turned the ordinary moviegoing experience into a glittering, defiant act of joy. It has been a beloved Gay Christmas tradition. This Halloween, the fishnets, rice fight, and irreverence return as the 50th Anniversary Spectacular Tour lands at the Orpheum Theatre, Minneapolis, on October 31 at 8 PM.

What started in 1973 as a scrappy London stage show became, in Barry Bostwick’s words, “a place to celebrate the traits that society writ large tells them are not okay.” Bostwick, who first played Brad Majors, a hero, now travels the country with co-stars Nell Columbia Campbell and Patricia Magenta Quinn, keeping the midnight magic alive.

Bostwick says, “It’s not just about the local queer community…It’s about total orientation… we’re on our third generation: grandmothers and grandfathers bringing their grandchildren.” Fans at the Orpheum can expect pre-show virgin ceremonies, costume contests, and a live shadow cast by Transvestite Soup. Bostwick advises: “Be the person you’ve been hesitating to be all your life…Don’t dream it, be it… to a point.” And if you can’t get to this special showing, you can watch Rocky Horror in hundreds of special presentations this week across the country.
