There’s growing speculation about why Donald Trump ordered a U.S. invasion of Venezuela, seizing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and bringing them to the United States on drug charges. Trump claims Maduro is a drug kingpin. But critics note Trump previously has pardoned the former president of Honduras, convicted of trafficking 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S. Others point to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves as the real motive.
However, another theory is gaining traction: hurt feelings.
According to The New York Times, the U.S. urged Maduro to accept exile in Turkey. After receiving an ultimatum, Maduro instead danced onstage with supporters, chanting “no crazy war.” The White House reportedly saw the dance as taunting and disrespectful. Three days later, the U.S. invaded.
The timing also raised eyebrows. The invasion coincided with a deadline for the Justice Department to explain redactions in the Epstein files.
