In 1988, Super Mario Bros 2 Introduced A Trans Icon. Now She’s Back On The Big Screen

When Super Mario Bros 2 was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, one character stood out. The game’s manual described Birdo as a character who liked to dress as a girl, and preferred to be called Birdetta. While the character of Birdo is now fully embraced as female (and with her original name), many queer gamers still hold her up as a trans icon. Many of these gamers were excited to see Birdo’s appearance in the new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which dropped yesterday, and wonder if her trans history will be mentioned. YouTube user @RealBroccoliHour commented on the trailer saying,

“I wonder if they’ll address Birdo’s strange lore, or if it’ll be a “if you know, you know.” Type thing.”
