Texas Abortion Bounty Law Targets California Doctor

A California physician is the first to face a lawsuit under Texas’s so-called abortion bounty hunter law. A Texas man has sued Dr. Remy Coeytaux, accusing him of prescribing abortion pills to his alleged sexual partner. The suit was filed under Texas House Bill 7, which allows private citizens to seek at least $100,000 in damages from providers. The Center for Reproductive Rights, representing Coeytaux, called the law anti-freedom and anti-privacy. California has a shield law, signed by Gavin Newsom, blocking law enforcement from helping other jurisdictions to prosecute Californians. Advocates warn the case could escalate nationwide attacks on abortion access.
