October 6th, literally hundreds of Broward House supporters rallied at City Hall and refused to let misguided bureaucracy close one of South Florida’s most important programs for members of our community living with HIV/AIDS. After a lengthy deliberation, victory was at hand and funding was restored (see the photo feature on page 72). On Thursday Out Magazine, in conjunction with Macy’s, celebrated the INC’s latest fall collection with a fashion show benefiting Broward House at Macy’s in the Galleria. Also last Thursday, Mike Tascione, Jimmy Cordaro, and Alan Russell, opened Chow Restaurant and Lounge in Boca to a packed house. Chow serves modern Asian eclectic cuisine, not only is the food delish, the décor is top notch too.

Friday night the Stable hosted the kick-off party for Bubba’s Country Fair with the Queen of Corn/King of Cob contest. Who knew that Florida had so many closeted rednecks with a great sense of humor? Saturday and Sunday Ken, Lloyd and all the ‘country bumpkins’ over at Stable put on Bubba’s Country Fair that brought out huge crowds (including cowboys and cowgirls) despite the heat. This fundraiser had both bars overflowing as hundreds of people enjoyed the hot dog eating contest, bull riding, a chili cook off and more. Entertainment was top quality with national recording stars Dean and Lee headlining the entire event. Thanks to all of the staff at Scandals and the Stable (especially Bubba and Terry De Carlo from Broward House) for a great weekend! Did I mention that I still have hay in my teeth from riding the giant slide?

Saturday night President Obama addressed the sold out Equality Forum Dinner in Washington DC carried live on national TV. The president confirmed his commitment to supporting the LGBT community. His speech was often interrupted by thunderous applause and standing ovations as he talked about the struggle of the LBGT community.

Sunday also saw thousands from our GLBT community march on Washington in a show of unity demanding action now for equality. Hotspots contributors Mark and Carrie (of MC FILMFEST fame) joined hundreds of others in a bus caravan from Florida partaking in this momentous event.

Smart, outspoken, opinionated and one of a kind three-time Emmy Award-winning actress/comic Wanda Sykes returns to HBO for her second full-length stand-up special. Taped before a live audience at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., this riotous performance aired on HBO and featured Wanda’s hilarious takes on such topics as the first black president, healthcare reform, pirates, coming out, her reflections on a gay cruise she just took, being a new mom, getting older, a painful recollection of her recent trip to the bikini waxing studio, and much more. If you missed it, you can go to our video links on HotspotsMagazine.com or watch it again on HBO Oct. 23rd and 28th. Honestly, I laughed so hard I fell off the sofa!
