I headed over to the bay area Friday evening for St Pete Pride Weekend. Saturday I have heard how busy their parade and festival get, but until participating in it myself I didn’t believe it…it’s AMAZING! It is the largest pride festival in the state of Florida. While there I went to Hamburger Mary’s, Steam at the Honey Pot, Fresh Mouth, G-Bar, NY, NY Pizza and ended the weekend at the GaYBOR Days kick-off brunch at Gaspar’s Grotto where I met lovely owner Shere. Let me just say what a bargain the brunch at Gaspar’s is. For $24.95 you get unlimited buffet, which includes mimosas, etc. one vodka drink and one item from the menu. In addition the service was GREAT! I can’t wait to get back to the Bay Area real soon – they always treat me FAB!

There were 2 amazing events in South Florida this past weekend that I got the details of from friends. Clear blue skies faded into starry blue nights at this year’s annual Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce gala. What was this year’s color theme? You guessed it…blue! The event was held at the Hilton Miami Downtown and it was attended by the who’s who of South Florida.  From community leaders, to local and national companies, politicians and members of the media, all were present to support this year’s honorees which were the Morgan’s Hotel Group, Steve Rothaus of the Miami Herald, Safe Schools South Florida and George Neary.

The Broward Convention Center was beautiful and the perfect choice to honor Poverello’s  Father Bill’s 50 years of work for our community. The Jerry Wayne Band was awesome, the food delectable and the overall feeling was that this was an amazing event. Father Bill was overjoyed and extremely pleased. Tom Smith, CFO of Poverello said, “Dale Madison did a great job in organizing this event.”

It’s time to tell your story. In celebration of the diversity, individuality and pride within the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, Montreal is launching a global campaign in search of the “Queer of the Year!” Whether you’re a do-gooder, a diva, the average guy next door, a girl just out of the closet or anywhere in between, from now through July 15th Montreal wants you to visit QueerOfTheYearContest.com and show the world that you have what it takes! Participants are required to enter a one-minute video and submit applications explaining why they would be a perfect contestant. People will be judged on the following 5 criteria: personality, community involvement, sex appeal, healthy lifestyle and yes, even talent! The competition will be strong, so participants should rally Facebook friends, Twitter followers and family to vote for them. The top 20 participants with the most public votes on July 15th will then be interviewed by a panel of judges. From that group, five finalists will be selected to visit Montreal for an expenses-paid week during Montreal Pride (August 9-16), where they’ll explore one of the most LGBT-friendly cities on Earth and compete in a variety of challenges and activities. Ready to strut, smile and show what they’ve got, the finalists will be in the company of a film crew capturing all of the excitement. Website viewers will then be able to keep up with the action and vote for their favorite contestants. At each day’s challenge, judges will attribute points based on specific criteria. At the end of Pride Week, the finalist with the most public votes, combined with most points from the judges, will win the ultimate title of QUEER OF THE YEAR, a chance to take part in the Pride parade, and enjoy the Montreal VIP treatment on Monday, August 16th. Valued at approximately $4,000 CAD, the Montreal VIP treatment includes: designer shopping spree with a personal stylist, spa pampering package and a Montreal gourmet dining experience. For more information, prize info, rules or the latest Montreal LGBT news visit Tourism Montreal “Queer of the Year” website: QueerOfTheYearContest.com

Get A Life Pet Rescue (GetALifePetRescue.com) is going to be hosting a red-carpet “Puparazzi” gala in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, July 11th, in honor of a 19-year-old dachshund’s birthday and a 17-year-old’s, too. The theme will be to dress your dog like a famous celebrity! Mama, the 19-year-old, was a breeder reject with serious health issues who, through holistic care, is now a ripe old age and has assisted her “mom,” Stacy, in fostering over 600 abandoned dogs throughout the years. There will be Chinese auctions, raffles, a doggy pool, doggy treats, indoor doggy play room, a pet photographer, and of course, a real red carpet! The event takes place at The Barker’s Pet Resort, at 761 SE 17th St., Ft. Lauderale, from 2 to 4 pm. All gifts and donations will benefit Get A Life Pet Rescue, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates abandoned, abused, and neglected small breed dogs, even those with serious medical needs.

My very first memory of Joan Rivers, now 75, was when she was on the Tonight Show doing stand up and her joke was “May my mother in law rest in peace… (and then in a low breath said) soon.” I couldn’t stop laughing and with that one joke she gained a fan for life. “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” takes the audience on a year long journey with Joan Rivers.

The documentary peels away the mask of an iconic comedian, laying bare both the struggle and thrill of living life as a groundbreaking female performer. Filmmakers Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg (“The Devil Came on Horseback,” “The Trials of Darryl Hunt”) expose the private dramas of this legendary comedian as she fights to keep her career thriving in a business driven by youth and beauty. They follow Rivers as she attempts to regain the heat that radiated in the prime of her career. At this point, living in a beautiful Manhattan condo fit for a queen, Rivers has become something of a one-woman industry, with a staff of more than a half-dozen, whom she supports and treats with respect and kindness. Although she has a lot of expenses, the need that compels Rivers to perform isn’t born out of financial planning, it is the need to be adored and loved. What is clear is that Rivers is a tireless worker who has sacrificed almost all of herself to her art. The stage is the only place she says she truly feels happy. This movie is getting rave reviews and I suggest you put this on your must see list!
