Week 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race featured my favorite yearly challenge Snatch Game (a takeoff of one of all time favorite game shows Match Game). The best Cher Impersonator that I have ever seen, Chad Michaels, took the much deserved win. The queen who sashayed away was Puerto Rico’s own fierceness, Kenya Michaels, who sat down with us Tuesday morning for an interview.

At what age did female impersonation become an interest?
I started at the age of 15 on my sister’s birthday. My sister loves Celia Cruz so I impersonated Celia to make my sister happy on her birthday.
How did you pick your name?
I picked Kenya from the African country and I picked Michaels in honor of the choreographer Mia Michaels. I am a dance teacher in Puerto Rico and I love Mia Michaels.
How did you go about getting on “RuPauls Drag Race?” Tell me about the experience?
I saw the show for a couple seasons and decided to try out. I sent the audition tape in and the accepted me. I couldn’t believe it. The experience changed my life a lot for the better. This experience helped me grow up as an artist. I learned a lot! It also helped me learn a lot more English. To be honest, before RuPaul’s Drag Race I would have never been able to do an interview in English.
Who do you want to win?
Of course I want my sister Phi Phi O’hara to win. I think she has all the qualities to win this competition and she can ROCK!
Tell me about the man behind Kenya Michaels?
The man or the lesbian? People think I am a lesbian out of drag. Omar is a very powerful, energetic person, although he is a little bit quieter then Kenya.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you?
That although I am a little person, I am a fierce bitch!
What’s ahead for Kenya Michaels?
Right now I am making my costumes and stuff for my club tour, which starts this weekend in Vegas. I think I will be out of Puerto Rico for like 2 months. I have also been offered to be in a couple videos, so I am so excited about what the future holds.
