Nobody likes to think about it – aging, growing old. As people in the LGBT community lead more open lives than ever before, it is becoming apparent there are additional aging issues to face besides creaky bones. For many LGBT elders the wrenching decision to enter a nursing home, where homophobia may exist among some of the staff, or how to create a support system if family has deserted you, are just some of the problems LGBT seniors face. Inspired by the “vogueing” sensation featured in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, Sheldon Larry’s exuberant musical Leave it on the Floor debuts on DVD August 14th from Wolfe Video. With music by Beyonce’s music director Kim Burse, screenplay and lyrics by Glenn Gaylord, choreography by Beyonce’s dance master, Frank Gatson Jr. and eye-popping visuals and direction by Sheldon Larry, the film is an ode to the wild funky and heart-aching life of this underground subculture. The score is an impressive mix of hip-hop, techno and house and gives the entire film its heart-pumping pulse; the dance numbers and choreography bring it alive. Thrown out of his home by his dysfunctional mother, Brad (Ephraim Sykes) steals her car and travels into Los Angeles where, through a chance encounter, he stumbles into a noisy raucous, chaotic event and meets the ragtag members of the struggling House of Eminence. Initially only looking for a place to sleep (and perhaps someone to sleep with), Brad ends up engaging with the colorful members of the house led by the indomitable house mother Queef Latina (Barbie-Q), herself an aging ball-legend and the fierce protect rice of her family. Laughter, tears, sex sirens, and butch queens up in pumps ensue and remarkably, Brad ends up finding an extraordinary home and loving, caring family in this, the strangest of places. Leave it on the Floor has a running time of 107 minutes and is not rated. The DVD will feature extras including music videos and interviews with cast and crew and is available at WolfeVideo.com.
