Last week I told you about my trip to Central Florida and what a wonderful time I had there. This week I will catch up on some events I missed talking about plus tell you what happened this past weekend. The monthly Wilton Manors Art Walk, which takes place the third Friday of the month, was once again successful with people walking up and down Wilton Drive gazing at all the fabulous art in the shops and on the street. The Village Pub had their End of World party starring Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and even though Joe started stripping by the end of the party the world did not end…LOL! Alibi had their annual employee Christmas Party at Bills and once again this was a very fun time. The bartenders (spearheaded by Eric Brano) presented a signed and framed print of themselves to owners Jackson and Mark. This was a very tender moment! Congrats to Jackson and Mark for having such a thoughtful and nice staff! The Rainbow Business Coalition had their Holiday party at Satori on Sunrise Blvd, which was lots of fun. This past weekend the Manor went Asian with fierce productions, The Club Fort Lauderdale went black, the monthly Salvation Party had a special event at Nikki Beach starring DJ Abel, Discotekka had a Blast off to 2013 starring their original DJ Jarell, Boom had a Heat Wave, and the Depot had a New Year’s Eve Eve T Dance. Friday, January 4

Bubble Gum Fridays at the Manor celebrated the season 12 premier of American Idol with DJs JPS and Miik with Sasha as Nicki Minaj, Estephania as Mariah Carey and TP as Paula Abdul.

Saturday, January 5

Tamarac Theatre Of Performing Arts (7143 Pine Island Rd Tamarac) presents “The Sunshine Boys.” The play focuses on aging Al Lewis and Willy Clark, a one-time vaudevillian team known as “Lewis and Clark” who, over the course of forty-odd years, not only grew to hate each other but never spoke to each other off-stage throughout the final year of their act. Clark is convinced by his nephew Ben to revive one of the old routines one last time. Much of the humor is derived from efforts to get the two cantankerous actors into the same room for a rehearsal. Plays through Jan, 20 with show times: Sat 2pm & 8pm Sun 2pm. Tickets $25 and can be purchased at TTOPA.org.

The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival continues its monthly movie series “GLOW Miami” by presenting “Love Free or Die,” directed by Macky Alston. Winner of the Special Jury Prize for a documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2012, Love Free or Die follows the life of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay person to become a bishop in a major Christian denomination. The film chronicles Bishop Robinson in his quest for equality within the religious community he serves while, perhaps unintentionally, inspiring the change of perceptions around the world. Robinson, who was consecrated in 2003 wearing a bullet-proof vest for his protection, struggles with a major conflict between his love for God and his love for his partner Mark. This film shows both acceptance and rejection in a foreboding light. Scenes depicting hatred and aggressive disagreement from outsiders transition into Robinson’s emotional response in front of the congregation where he states so profoundly that, “The enemy of love is not hate, but fear.” Audiences are faced with the harsh reality of one man’s journey to live freely and the dark aspects of attempting to win a never-ending battle. The Gay & Lesbian Lawyers Network, Inc. (GLLN) announces a law student scholarship essay contest with the theme: “How to Deal with Bullying, or How I have learned to survive as a Sexual Minority”, with an award of $1200. The contest is open to all students currently enrolled in any South Florida Law school (FIU College of Law, Nova Southeastern Shepard Broad Law Center, St. Thomas University School of Law, and University of Miami School of Law). Essay submissions are limited to 1000 to 1200 words, and must be postmarked between January 26 and February 2, 2013, to GLLN Essay Contest, 2301 Wilton Dr, Suite 3, Wilton Manors, FL 33305 by U.S. mail.
