We were greeted by the manager, Peter, who guided us through a splendid array of delicious dishes throughout the evening. We started with fried jalapenos stuffed with tuna with spicy mayonnaise. I tried to go easy on this amazing appetizer since I knew that we were going to be trying a lot of food that evening, but it tasted so phenomenal, I wanted to bat J’s hand away and eat all of the halved crispy jalapenos myself. I have talked about this appetizer to friends like I talk about watching Downton Abbey—with excitement and great detail.
Next, we had a bowl of Miso Soup and a salad with ginger dressing— both staples at Japanese restaurants everywhere, but here they shined with a special touch that Tokyo seems to add to everything. The Miso Soup was among the best I’ve had.
Peter suggested some sushi rolls for us to try, yet I was still surprised (and extremely excited) when a giant sushi boat came drifting to the table. We sampled four kinds of sushi that night—and by sample, I mean devoured. I tried to be ladylike about it, but I don’t think I succeeded.
Our sushi boat included the Sky Roll ($12) which was tempura shrimp, crab salad, masago, cream cheese topped with avocado, spicy mayo, eel sauce and crunch; the Yum Yum Roll ($12) which is a cooked roll with fried white fish, avocado, spicy mayo and cream cheese topped with spicy tuna, masago, eel sauce and crunch; the Dynamite Roll ($6.95) cooked crab meat, shrimp, fish egg and mayonnaise; and the Tempura JB Roll ($6.95) which was salmon, cream cheese and scallion.
The sushi was fresh, beautifully presented and the combinations were so flavorful. We had a debate on which was our favorite of the rolls and couldn’t decide between the Yum Yum Roll and the Sky Roll — both were so delicious and a must for all sushi lovers.
Afterwards, we split a piece of the Cassava Cake, which is a popular Filipino dessert made with, as the name suggests, cassava, which is basically yucca. It is also made with coconut milk and is a creamy, dense and fantastic dessert.
There are also options for those who don’t like sushi, including a variety of hibachi dishes, teriyaki dishes and fried rice options. In addition, there are several beer and sake options for those who want to have a drink with their meal (or a little meal to go with their drinks).
Those looking for a deal (and who isn’t?) will love Tokyo’s Half Price Menu which is available between 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday.
They offer take-out and also a drive-thru for those on the go.
