Movie producer, Arthur E. Friedman, (Beyond the Sea: The Bobby Darin Story starring Kevin Spacey and The Price of Glory starring Jimmy Smits) operating partner of the Classic Gateway believes that, “The magic of seeing a great movie in a classic movie theatre is what dreams are made of. All the movies in this festival were made to be seen in a theatre, where they belong.”
Mr. Friedman, who has owned and operated movie theatres such as the legendary Harvard Square Theatre in Cambridge, MA, and the four unique theatres on Martha’s Vineyard, is a lover of classic movies. “Through the years, watching thousands of movies, I have learned that the movie theatre experience cannot be duplicated on television, video or any other new technology,” commented Friedman. “There’s something about being in a theatre with an audience, watching a great movie that is unique and spellbinding. Having an emotional experience such as laughing or crying, being thrilled or even scared, or for that matter simply enjoying a moment together with family, friends, neighbors and the rest of the audience, creates memories that last forever.”
The 2nd Annual Classic Film Festival will present three epic films by director David Lean – Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, and Lawrence of Arabia – and two delightfulFrank Capra/Jimmy Stewart films – Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life. Two of Hollywood’s most memorable love stories will have you reaching for your kleenex: An Affair to Remember, starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and The Way We Were, starring the inimitable Streisand and Redford. Also presented will be two of the funniest comedies of all time, Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein and Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, starring Peter Sellers. Mystery buffs won’t want to miss the template from which all future detective movies evolved, The Maltese Falcon, and Woody Allen fans will want to catch the vintage Woody film Manhattan.
