ABOUT IDINA MENZEL

Menzel is a New York native who was interested in singing from a young age. She started working as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer at the age of 15, while she was attending Syosset High School. She continued singing at weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs while she attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

In 1995, at the age of 24, she auditioned for a then-new musical called Rent. She won the role of Maureen Johnson, which would be her Broadway debut. Originally an off-Broadway production, the show quickly moved to the Broadway stage, where it became one of the most popular musicals of the decade. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her performance, and continued in the role through July 1997.

After leaving the production of Rent, she recorded her first album, Still I Can’t Be Still, which was released in 1998. She appeared on Broadway as Amneris in Aida, and she earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for her performance in the off-Broadway production The Wild Party. From 2003 to 2005, she appeared as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the musical Wicked. She won her first Tony Award as a result of playing this role. Also in 2005, she appeared as Maureen in the film version of Rent, which was a worldwide success.

She went on to earn another Drama Desk Award nomination for her role in See What I Wanna See. Afterwards, she reprised her role as Elphaba in Wicked, this time in London’s West End. During her four-month stint in 2006, she was the highest-paid female performer in the West End (at that time), earning $30,000 per week. She would continue to release albums as well, with her offerings Here (2004) and I Stand (2008) being particularly well-received.

In 2010, she began a recurring role on the television series Glee, playing the mother of Lea Michele’s character Rachel Berry. She also voiced characters in two Disney movies: Nancy Tremaine in Enchanted (2007) and Queen Elsa in Frozen (2013). The single “Let It Go,” from the Frozen soundtrack, became a pop crossover hit, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and winning an Academy Award and a Grammy Award. From March 2014 to March 2015, she starred in the Broadway musical If/Then. She was nominated for another Tony Award for her performance.
