Stonewall Movie Series at the Stonewall National Museum – Wilton Manors Gallery (2157 Wilton Drive), presents Do I Sound Gay? Is there such a thing as a “gay voice”? Why do some people “sound gay” but not others? Why are gay voices a mainstay of pop culture but also a trigger for bullying and harassment? Do I Sound Gay? explores these questions in revealing and entertaining interviews with LGBT cultural icons Margaret Cho, Tim Gunn, Don Lemon, Dan Savage, David Sedaris and George Takei. While confronting his own anxiety over sounding gay, journalist David Thorpe explores the cultural history of the gay voice in film and television. Free to attend. Death and Harry Houdini is co-presented with The House Theatre of Chicago at the Adrienne Arsht Center at the Carnival Studio Theater – Ziff Ballet Opera House through May 21. A ringmaster leads us through the events of Harry Houdini’s life. Audiences travel from the untimely passing of his father, through his first tent shows with his younger brother Theo, meeting his wife Bess, and beginning a journey towards fame on the Vaudeville circuit. All the while, Harry feels Death close on his heels and he won’t rest until he’s conquered him once and for all. Harry will walk on broken glass, swallow razor blades and risk his life in the Water Torture Cell, but will he pull off an escape from Death? Marvel with us as Houdini battles Death once more. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is pleased to announce the opening of two group exhibitions. Outside In is a collaboration with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency featuring 24 artists from the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. Plush is a 10-person textile exhibit that includes fiber artists working in traditional and non-traditional techniques. The exhibitions will run from April 29 through June 4, with the opening reception taking place today from 6 – 9 pm. Admission to the opening reception is $10 for adults and free for members. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday, 10 am – 5 pm; Saturday – Sunday 12 – 4 pm; closed on Mondays. Admission to the Center is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors and students, and free for Members.
